SEVENASIDE RUGBY TOURNAMENT ENTRY OF THIRTY TEAMS AT RANGIORA Thirty teams, compared with 28 last year, will take part in the annual King's birthday seven-a-side Rugby football tournament, at Rangiora on Wednesday. The tournament is being conducted for the North Canterbury Sub-Union by the North Canterbury Club. Entries consist of 10 teams in the senior grade, seven teams in the junior grade, nine teams in the under 18 grade, and four teams in the under 17 grads. Details of the entries are as follows: Senior grade—Kowai, Amberley, Oxford, Glenmark (2), Woodend (2), Cust, North Canterbury (2). Junior grade—Ghoka (2), Loburn. Oxford, Glenmark, Cust. North Canterbury. Under 18 grade—Kowai. Amberley, Loburn (2), Glenmark, Woodend (2), Rangiora High School, North Canterbury. Under 17 grade—Kowai, Woodend, Rangiora High School, North Canterbury. Kins: George V Memorial Up to last evening, gifts received in the Rangiora district for the King George V Memorial Fund totalled £96 lis. In addition to local body giftsalready mentioned, the total includes £ls from the Ashley Countv Council. Though the list closed officially yesterday, there may be one or two more amounts to be added. Stock Sale on Monday Because of the King's birthday holiday on Wednesday, the Addington stock sale will be held on Tuesday next week. This will necessitate the holding of the weekly market at Rangiora on Monday instead of Tuesday. Women's Hockey Teams Following is the Rangiora Women's Hockey Club's senior A team to play Pukaki at Hagley Park, Christchurch, to-morrow:—N. Forward. J. Harper, B. Watkins, N. Prestney. N. Increased Borough Rate Mainly because of higher wages, shorter hours, and expenditure on highways, the Rangiora Borough Council's estimates for the current year provide for n general rate of 6d in the £ on the unimproved value, compared with 51d last year. Special rates are:—Ashley bridge }d. water lid, sewerage 2d. and hospital id (approximately, depending l on the amount of the Hospital Board's levy). These figures were considered at a special meeting of the council on Wednesday evening, and will be submitted to the next meeting of the council for confirmation. As special rates are the same as last year, the total rates for the current year show an increase of ?d over those of last year, but are only id in the £ more than those of two years ago. Church Secretary Honoured Mr C. D. Gilling. secretary of the Rangiora Baptist Church, who will leave during the week-end to live in Dunedin, was honoured at a farewell social gathering after the church's mid-week service last evening. Mr Gilling has been appointed headmaster of the High Street School in Dunedin. Appreciation of Mr GUling's work was expressed by the Rev. E P. Y. Simpson, who presented Mr and Mrs Gilling with an electric jug. Mrs I. Jones spoke for the women of the church. Mr C. E. Dawson will succeed Mr Gilling as secretary of the church. Mrs Gilling will not leave Rangiora for some weeks. Personal The Venerable Archdeacon A. C. Purchas will leave Rangiora to-mor-row morning to pay his annual visit to parishes on the West Coast. He wjII be away for about 10 days, and will visit the Kumara, Hokitika and Ross parishes. Mr B. S. Williams, a student at College House, Christchurch, will conduct services at St John's Anglican Church on Sunday week. MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS NEW RECORD AT CULVERDEN A new record was created at the Culverden Post Office for the registration of motor vehicles up to the end of May. A total of 173 vehicles were registered to May 31, compared with 141 last year. The highest number for any one day was 25, which were issued on May 27. The total number of registrations for last year was 273. Personal Mrs L. Mills, Culverden, who has been visiting Auckland, has returned home. Weather During May A total of 1.63 inches of rain was recorded in Culverden during the month of May compared with 1.02 inches for 1936, 1.79 for 1935, and 3.03 for 1934 for the corresponding month. Rain fell on 11 days, compared with seven days for last year, and highest falls were registered on May 19, when 51 points fell. The total up to the end of May for the year is 8.0 inches, compared with 13.57 for the corresponding period for the year, 1936. INTER-SCHOOL GAMES AT SPRINGSTON SOUTH A football match was played on the Springston South ground. A team of scholars from Burnham, Rolleston. and Weedons met the Springston South schoolboys. The combined team were the winners, the score being 23 to 3. Mr Ray Harris was referee. A basketball match by a combined team of scholars of Burnham, Rolleston, and Weedons Schools were beaten by the Springston South School children. The scores were 13-3. Miss Harvie was referee. The Tai Tapu basketball team met the Wakipa team on the Springston South ground. The Tai Tapu Club won by 5 goals to 3. Miss Iris Powell was referee. Personal Miss Miriam Cook, of Springston South, is spending a holiday in Wellington. Mr and Mrs M. W. Fletcher, "Selwyn Huts," are spending a holiday in Nelson. Mr A. Leslie has returned after spending a holiday in Timaru. Miss Adelaide Bissett is spending a holiday in Rotorua.

BRACKENFIELD HUNT HOUNDS MEET AT RYDAL DOWNS The weather was bright and warm yesterday for the meet of the Brackenfield Hunt at Rydal Downs, Okuku. Hunting conditions were very baa. The dry north-westerly wind destroyed the scent, and no kills were made. , Riders and followers were entertained to afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs E. Ensor at the homestead. Those riding were the joint masters, Mr Denis Chapi.ian, who acted as huntsman, on Sheriff, and Mr H. D., Greenwood on Bay Rhum, the honorary whip, Mr I. Menzies, Pinocchio, Mr R. HOUSING SCHEME AT KAIAPOI FOUR BEING ERECTED AT PRESExYT Applications for the erection of seven houses under the Kaiapoi Borough Council's housing scheme No. 3 have been approved to date, four of which are being erected. Under the council's No. 2 housing scheme, nine houses were erected, which proved a valuable asset to the borough and the owners concerned. The total number of houses erected and in course of construction under the borough housing scheme is 23. Personal Mr H. C. Revell (Kaiapoi) has received advice from the Minister for In-! ternal Affairs that he has been appointed Government representative on the Kaiapoi Fire Board. DUNSANDEL PLUNKET SOCIETY The annual meeting of the Dunsandel sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held recently. Mrs Barnett welcomed Mrs C. Wood and Mrs Godby I ttom the Christchurch branch, members and mothers. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and Mrs Barnett commented on the improvement of finances. It was proposed and carried that in future all members be asked to assist the committee with the annual effort. Mrs C. Macpherson. in recognition of seven years' untiring service. HORORATA YOUNG FARMERS' .. CLUB Mr R. Banks presided at the monthly meeting of the Hororata Young Farmers' Club. Messrs A. D. Oliver and J. F. Thwaites were appointed trustees to the club. Mr M. E. Jenkins, of Darfield, gave an interesting talk on ! Clydesdale horses. Mothers' Union There was a very fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Hororata branch of the Mothers' Union. The Rev. C. W. I. Maclaverty gave two readings entitled. "Guild of the Spectacle Maker," and "Is the World Good or Bad." Miniature Rifle Shooting The first Pedder Shield match this year, between the Haldon and Hororata Rifle Clubs, was held on the Haldon range. Haldon won the match by 1355 to 1318. Personal Mr R. McKee. of the Hororata postal staff, is on annual holiday leave. Mrs D. Wilson, who has been visiting Mr and Mrs H. Oliver, "Springhead," has returned to Lyttelton. Rainfall for May Weather records taken by Mr Jewell. "Terrace Station." Hororata, show that ■rain fell on 17 days in May, the maximum fall being on May 9, when 82 noints were registered. The rainfall for May was 2.65 in. compared with 74 points for May. 1936. The rainfall for the year to the end of May was 15.80 in. compared with 22.78 in for the same period in 1936. Fourteen frosts were registered last month, the most severe being 10 degrees on May 9. MARSHLAND HALL COMMITTEE At the monthly meeting of the Marshland Hall Committee, Mr D. Goode Cchairman) presided. The committee is desirous of renovating the supper room, and arrangements were made to hold an oldtime dance on July 1, to raise funds for this purpose. Sports Club The Marshland Sports Club recently completed the purchase of an area of land in Prestons road, to be used as a playing ground for the various clubs in the district, and a meet- j ing will be held soon to consider the finances of the club and its relation to the newly-formed Domain Board. DARFIELD SPINSTERS AND BACHELORS Mr G. McMillan presided over a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Darfield spinsters and bachelors. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory credit balance.
