BASKETBALL NOTES

KING'S BIRTHDAY TOURNAMENT MORE THAN 100 ENTRIES RECEIVED [By SHOOT.] With an entry of 103 teams, the highest number yet entered for the annual basketball tournament, held oh the King's Birthday, the 1937 fixture promises to be one of exceptional interest. Entries have not been restricted to local teams and 14 teams from surrounding country districts will take part. The senior and senior A players will not be affected by the entry of the country players, however, and they will play their usual matches, the seniors commencing at 2 p.m. and the senior A players at 1.30 p.m. Matches in all other grades will begin at 10 a.m. No Training College teams will take part in the tournament, and as University has not entered in the senior grade; the senior teams will each play four matches only, provided there are no finals to decide. Matches will be restricted to 10 minutes —two spells of five minutes, with a break. Otherwise the playing rules will be the same as those for ordinary competition matches. The successful teams at the 1936 tournament were:—Senior grade: Technical A: senior A grade, Beckenham; senior B grade. Sacred Heart A; junior B grade, A.8.C.; and C grade, Ohoka. Referees Too Lenient Leniency among the Canterbury referees was apparent to many senior players and spectators on Saturday, when they saw the decisions of a visiting referee in the match between Digby's A and Training College. The visitor's refereeing was the cause of adverse, as well as favourable criticism. Some spectators were of the opinion that his rulings were too severe, but the rules laid down by the New Zealand Council should be obeyed to the letter. It is evident that some of the finer points of the rules are being overlooked by some of the local referees, and stricter adherence will be necessary before the local representatives can meet other provincial teams on an equal basis. Players are aware that the wearing of jewellery while playing is forbidden, yet some players are continuing to do so. and this breach is being overlooked by the referees. Captains should make it their duty to inspect their teams and remove any jewellery before going on the courts. The rule stating that after an infringement, a pass must be taken at the exact spot indicated by the referee is not being strictly adhered to. If the player does not stand on the exact spot indicated, the pass will be given to the opposition. Should the second player commit the same offence, the ball will be returned to her opponent. Thus

much delay is caused through ignorance or carelessness. Club Matches High scores were a feature of the. senior games on Saturday. In each match, the winning team scored over 20 goals. Digby's headed the list with a score of 25 against Training College's 4. Although one-sided it was a fast game. Digby's showed some excellent team work and R. McKendry seldom failed in her shooting. The only outstanding player in the Training College side was A. Penderton, a wing-centre with keen anticipation. She attacked tirelessly, but was given little support. The Technical A v. Awatea match was dull. Technical played easily and almost disinterestedly, yet Awatea was beaten. The score was 22-3. With O. Wheatley playing in top form, St. Mary's secured 22 goals against Beckenham. This match was won as easily as the other two senior games and Beckenham was able to score 16 goals. Beckenham owed its good showing to its forward, R. Cursons, and its defender, R. Phillips. Both were prominent in field play and R. Cursons was also prominent for her accurate shooting. M. Scott was the outstanding centre player for St. Mary's.' She combines well with G. Irving. Beau Ideal Cup Scoring at the rate of almost a goal a minute. Monarch aggregated 37 goals in its match against Matchless, and thus maintains its position as head of the Beau Ideal Cup list. The Richmond Old Girls team is only 8 goals behind. Details are as follows: Monarch 136. Richmond Old Girls 128, Richmond Pirates 114. Vulcan 110. Technical A 108, Canberra 106, Marshland A 100.
