* The Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning from Wellington and went on to Dunedin. Mr Justice O'Regan, acting-president of the Arbitration Court, arrived from the north yesterday morning. The Hon. T. F. O'Byrne, M.L.C., was a passenger by the steamer express from the north yesterday. Commander E. G. Rhodes arrived from Wellington yesterday morning. Mr W. R. Carey, manager of the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, returned from the north yesterday. Major W. I. K. Jennings, of the General Headquarters staff, Wellington, arrived from the north yesterday morning. Mr A. R. Harris was a passenger by steamer express from the north yesterday. Dr. G. F. V. Anson, Wellington, arrived from the north yesterday. Sir James Grose has been appointed a director of the New Zealand branch of the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia, Ltd. A motion of sympathy with Mr I. Woolf, a member of the association, in the death of his wife, was passed at the meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association. Mr F. Jacomb, of Napier, who has been appointed manager of the Civic Theatre, has arrived in Christchurch to take over his duties. Mr William Clark, who recently retired from the service of the Christchurch Gas Company, had been 33 years in the company's emp'oy. He joined as a lamplighter and was the first of that staff to use a bicycle (solid tyres) although other members were using tricycles. Mr Clark has held various positions with the Gas Company, and at the time of his retirement was a member of the office staff. He received a gift from his colleagues. Mr F. G. Armstrong (chairman) and Mr W. E. M. Jacobson (secretary), of the Akaroa Cocksfoot Growers' Association, left by the steamer express last night for Wellington. Mr C. G. Collins has been appointed DeputyController and Auditor-General, according to a Gazette notice issued last night. The Gazette published last night contains the following list of members of the Teachers' Appeal Board for 1937:—Chairman, Mr T. R. Cresswell; representatives of the Education Department, Messrs A. Bell, W. S. La Trobe, and J. W. Mcllraith; representatives of Teachers at technical schools, Messrs H. A. Jones, and G M. Keys; primary schools, Messrs W. F. Abel, G. F. Griffiths, T. Kane, and R. McGlashen. Mr James Leslie was re-elected chairman of the Paparua County Council yesterday. Exactly 25 years ago yesterday Mr Leslie was first elected chairman, and has held the position ever since. Mr W. D. Warren, of Wellington, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning by the steamer express.
