LINWOOD-DALLINGTON-WAINONI BUS

TO THE EDITOR OT THE PRESS. Sir,—l have heard so many comments on the Tramway Board's treatment of the Linwood-Dallington-Wainoni bus users that I quite expected someone to write to you on the subject before this. Since the route has been changed to Manchester-High street, we hpve been very badly served in regard to bus stops. The stop in Cathedral square has been moved to the back of the Cathedral—a convenient enough place for- people coming from the north part of the city, but not for those coming from the south. There is no shelter here, and if we wait in the Bank of New Zealand corner shelter in wet weather until the bus comes round the corner, we st=>nd a good chance of being left behind. The trees in the Cathedral grounds did provide some shelter at the old stopping place. Our other choice is the corner of High and Cashel streets—probably the most congested small area in the city. The cars and bicycles are so thick here that the bus has to stop just where it can—rarely near the notice or wilhin the marked area. The Lichfield-Cashel streets section is ridiculously short, and the Cashel street-Cathedral square one the longest in the city, so why not divide it more evenly and move the stop to the Triangle. That would be more easily got at from all parts of the city and a very much pleasanter place to stand and wait. —Yours, etc., FAIR PLAY. May 29, 1937. [Commenting on this letter, the General Manager and Secretary of the Tramway Board (Mr H. E. Jarman) said that when the Linwood-Dallington people were served by trams a stop was made at Ballantynes corner. Now that buses were used, the stop was at the White Hart Hotel. There was little difference in distance to Cathedral Sauare from either stop. Because of the shelter provided at the White Hart stop, it would be a mistake to move the stop to the Triangle. The bus stops were provided by the City Council. The complaint, however, would be further investigated.]
