CHURCHES AND GAMBLING
TO TH« BDITOB OF THE PBKSS Sir,—lt is generally agreed that the Church as a whole is averse to gambling of any nature, and the accumulation of wealth by any means other than honest toil. With this in mind I find it difficult to see why, at church gatherings such as fairs, etc., to which the public is usually invited, games and competitions which are on the border between gambling and skill are reverted to in order to raise funds I will not mention any one church or any particular game or competition, as my criticism is general, but I think that the Church should take a firm stand in the matter and see that no scheme violating its principles is sanctioned. The public generally are always quick to point to the Church and say, "Practise what you preach," and should not be given any opportunity to do so, but I think that at present the Church unfortunately is inclined to look at this matter without the care that is necessary.— Yours, etc., COME TO THE FAIR. June 3. 1937.
