BASKETBALL MATCHES

TO THB EDITOR OF THB PBEBB. Sir,—As a basketball "fan" of many years standing I should like to take exception to "Shoot's" report of the Technical A-St. Mary's match on Saturday. As an unbiased critic I quite agree that Technical were the better team on the day, but as to the report on the play, it is quite Incorrect and misleading. It says, "St. Mary's were overwhelmed in all departments." This is not so. The weakness was in the goal-throwers. Further, the report says "O. Wheatley was given no opportunity of showing her skill as a goal thrower." Miss Wheatley was admirably fed with the ball, but with all due respect to this fine player, it was her day off. The St. Mary's centres played a great game and I would be prepared to say that with O. Wheatley and B. Hannam on their game, the return match with these two teams wil be the tit-bit of the season. Only a fortnight ago "Shoot" credited U. Amos, of St. Mary's, with playirg a splendid game for an entirely different team. These incorrect reports are disheartening to these players and I would ask "Shoot' to become more conversant with the names of the players. St. Mary's have never had an encouraging report yet, in spite of their being able to tie with Technical for the leading position in the competition. lam no partisan of St. Mary's, but I think in fairness to these girls their individual efforts are worthy of fairer criticism.—Yours, etc., SQUARE SHOOTER. May 31. 1937.
