COUNTY COUNCILS

-AKAROA Mr C. B. Thacker, chairman, presided at a meeting of the Akaroa County Council, held at Duvauchelle. There were present: Crs. O. A. Thelning. A. R. Haylock, S. J. Vogan. Jos. Hayward, and E. Hay. It was decided to put a bridge on the Robinson’s Bay road, leading to the quarry. Cr. Haylock reported that he had inspected the Lighthouse road. Akaroa, and decided that some corners should be taken back. Messrs Kay Bros, wrote for an approach off the road to Onawe Peninula. It was left to the chairman to interview Messrs Kay Bros, about the matter. The County Clerk (Mr C. Stewart) reported that Messrs Ross and Brown, of the Unemployment Board, had called at the Countv Office and had explained the principles under which unemployed labour could be used. The Mount Herbert County Council wrote that they agreed fully with the motion passed by the Peninsula local bodies at the recent conference held at Duvauchelle. The Wairewa County Council also wrote that their council had approved of the resolution that they did not favour amalgamation; and the motion had been forwarded to the Minister for Internal Affairs. Mr C. B. Thacker, was appointed the council's delegate at the annua] conference of the New Zealand Counties’ Association, in August. Accounts amounting to £B4l 19s 4d were passed for payment. OXFORD The monthly meeting of the Oxford County Council was held. There were present: Messrs P. Fisher (chairman) L. Watson, F. J. Gorton. T. Doody, W. H. Collings, C. F. Bassett, and H. G. Parish. Consideration was given to the securing of a more reliable water supply lot the Eyre water-race area, and it was decided to proceed to some scheme to obtain water from the Eyre river for the water races. It was decided to proceed with the redecking of the Ashley bridge. A protest was lodged against the proposal of the Governmei to take over the issuing of drivers’ licences, which would deprive the county of considerable revenue. A deputation from the Public Library, consisting of Misses F. McCormack. and P. Beere. waited on the council requesting financial support for the litiu-y. The deputation pointed out that the committee was making a determined effort to Increase interest in the library, and to raise funds. There are two public' libraries in the district—at View Hill and at Oxford. The following resolution was carried: “That for this year, the council grant a subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £lO to any public library in the county .for moneys raised over and above the ordinary subscriptions of regular subscribers.” Regarding the amalgamation of local bodies it was resolved that the pronosed legislation, making provision for the amalgamation of local bodies be amended to provide for the ultimate decision to rest with the ratepayers. The matter of erecting another cottage was deferred. There is. however, a shortage of suitable houses in the district
