Eruption at Rabaul in New

Guinea The eruption of two volcanoes near the town of Rabaul in New Guinea has caused apprehension for the safety of the 4500 people living there. The volcanoes are quite

close to the town. One of them, Matupi Island, is only two and a quarter miles away, and the other, Vulcan Island, is four and a quarter miles away. By their eruption they have blocked the entrance to the harbour. Both volcanoes have been very active. Thick sulphur fumes swept the town, and the streets were blocked with pumice, mud, and dust thrown from them. Trees were broken by the weight of the mud, and two ships sank in the harbour. Fortunately the people seem to have had sufficient warning to escape without injury, and have gone to a village 60 miles away. A warship is taking food to them. Rabaul is situated on a large island off the coast of the mainland of New Guinea. It is the capital of the mandated territory. The map shows the harbour, with Rabaul at the head of it, and the two volcanic islands. It also shows several extinct volcanoes near the town. Davis Cup Tennis By winning the doubles match, after having won both singles on the opening day, the United States tennis team beat the Australian team in the Davis Cup tie. The United States team will now play the winner of the European zone final for the right to challenge the holder, Great Britain. Birthday of Queen Mary Queen Mary celebrated her seventieth birthday last week. At Marlborough House she held a birthday luncheon party at which nearly every member of her family was present. Queen Mary is in excellent health in spite of the strain imposed by the Cori ©nation.
