WAR IN SPAIN
Fears of Trouble with Other
Nations Events in Spain in the last few days have produced fears of the trouble involving other nations. The German battleship Deutschland, one of the ships taking part in the patrol of Spanish coasts under the international scheme, was lying in Iviza harbour when Spanish Government aeroplanes flew over it. The pilots said that the battleship opened fire on them, so they replied by bombing it. The result was that the battleship was hit twice, and 23 men were killed and many others injured. The battleship later went to Gibraltar. Because of this attack on the Deutschland, another German battleship, the Admiral Scheer, and four destroyers, later shelled the town of Almeria. The Spanish Government has protested against this action, claiming that the bombing of the Deutschland was a mistake, and that the reprisals at Almeria were unnecessary. Germany and Italy have now withdrawn from the international scheme to prevent munitions of war being taken to either side in the Spanish civil war. They have announced that if any German or Italian ships are attacked in future they will jointly take action against the Spanish Government. This means that the British proposal for an armistice has come to nothing. The Pope’s Birthday Pope Pius XI celebrated his eightieth birthday on Monday. Although he seemed to re-
cover from his serious illness of a few months ago, his condition has again been giving alarm this week. London Bus Strike The London bus strike ended last week. The busmen went on strike before the Coronation and caused considerable inconvenience to Londoners for* some weeks. '
