WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

LINCOLN ' ' 1 The May meeting of the Lincoln Women’s Institute was held in the ; Public Hall, where Mrs Hopley presided over a good attendance. One | new member was welcomed. Miss Elaine Bailey, of Springston, gave a demonstration on wood fibre flower making. Mrs S. Birch and Miss Bailey judged the monthly competitions, which resulted as follows: —Something new from something old; Mrs Templeton 1, Mrs Tucker 2, Mrs Jordan 3. Nut loaf: Mrs Jordan 1, Mrs Templeton 2, Mrs Moreland 3. Specimen bloom: Mrs Templeton 1, Mrs Jordan 2, Mrs E. Birch 3. The hostesses were Mrs A. Birch, Mrs E. Birch, and Miss N. Bailey. PREBBLETON There was a good attendance of members at the May meeting of the Prebbleton Women’s Institute, at which Mrs T. Coleman presided. An invitation to the Ladbrooks Institute’s birthday was received. Mrs Kolkman was nominated for the office of group convener. It was decided to give a special prize for the best design for an

institute banner, the entries to be received at the June meeting. A useful demonstration of making egg-shell flowers was given by Mrs Wellsmore, of Hornby, for which she was thanked. Mrs H. Brooks and Mrs Wellsmore were judges for the month’s competitions. The following were successful:— Best bloom: Mrs A. Gallagher 1, Mrs J. Easterbrook 2, Mrs W. Kolkman 3. Three best table potatoes: Mrs J. Anderson 1. Mrs G. Millar 2, Miss Horsfeld 3. Jar of tomato relish: Mrs M. Dickie 1. Mrs W. Kolkman 2, Mrs J. Cunneen 3. Embroidered guest towel: Mrs Widdowson and Mrs Coleman (equal) 1. Mrs J. Easterbrook 2, and Mrs G. Millar 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. Anderson. F. Carter, M. Dickie, and Widdowson, KIRWEE The monthly meeting of the Kirwee Women’s Institute was held recently with Mrs Thompson presiding. A lecture was given by Sister M. G. Davies, of Christchurch, on “Diet in Relation to Health.” Competition results were as follows; Best blooms—First class: Mrs A. Anderson 1, Miss M. Selby 2. Mrs Stott 3; second class: Mrs Selby 1, Mrs Selby 2, Miss L. Thompson 3. Article costing not more than Is; Mrs A. Anderson 1. Mrs A. Thompson 2, Mrs McKie 3. Eggless cake: Mrs A. Anderson

ASHLEY There was a record attendance at the third birthday party pt the Ashley Women’s Institute. The hall was tastefully decorated with red, white, and blue streamers. Music for dancing was played by Miss D. Brady and Mrs McKenzie (violin). A one-act play was presented by the Women’s Institute, those taking part being Misses Monica Lowe, Zita Beattie, Monica Wright, Mrs H. Hill, Misses Irene Vette, Nora Downing, and Eileen Bowbyes. An exhibition of fancy dancing was given by Misses Noreen Barnard, Gwen Momo, Valarie Simpson (Kaiapoi). and Iris Pateman (Oxford), and was much appreciated. As a token of appreciation from the members, Mrs W. Macann presented Miss Croft (president) with a posy and Misses E. Bowbyes (secretary) and Z. Beattie (treasurer), each with a shoulder spray. A buffet supper was served, an iced cake holding a conspicuous position. Before cutting the cake Miss Croft welcomed the visitors. She then presented the prizes won in competitions throughout the year as follows:—Most

points: Mrs H. Pateman 1, Miss Z. Beattie 2. Best bloom, prize given by Mr C. H. Downing. Mrs W. Macann 1. Mrs G. S. Smith 2. Most points in all sections, cup given by Miss Croft: Mrs H. Pateman 1. Speakers from other districts were Mrs A. Ashworth (Sef-ton-Kowai), Mrs Simpson < Kaiapoi), Miss Bailey (Ohoka), Mrs L F. Croft (Amberley Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union). The candles on the cake' were lit by the oldest member, Mrs S. Fairbrother, and extinguished by the youngest member. Miss Monica Wright. Miss Croft then cut the cake. BARRHILL At the May meeting of the Barrhill Women’s Institute Mrs J. Mclntosh presided, and demonstrations on pewter work and smocking were given by Mrs Watson, Higfabank. Competitions, which were judged by the visitors, resulted as follows: Article from 2oz of wool. Miss M. Hurst 1. Miss J. Hayward 2; sponge cake. Miss J. Hayward 1; chrysanthemums, Miss J. Hayward 1, Mrs E. Hurst 2. Mrs E. Hurst was hostess.
