WOMEN’S HOCKEY VISIT OF ENGLISH TEAM TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND NEXT SEASON (By LEFT HALF.] The announcement that the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association has decided to invite an English team to lour this country next season means that it has accepted the offer of the All-England Women’s Hockey Association to send a team. As mentioned in these notes earlier in the season, the visitors would pay their own expenses to New Zealand, after which all expenses in this country would be borne by the New Zealand Association. Players here are eagerly looking forward to the visit of such a strong side, which should do much to stimulate interest in the game. Last Saturday’s games ended the first series of matches in the women’s senior A grade competition. The most important game in this round was that between Technical and West Christchurch, who were separated by only half a point at the head of the table. In a match that was not epectacular, Technical was beaten by one goal. The Technical forwards were never allowed much room to work. West Christchurch concentrating on defence. In spite of this, Technical had several good chances—which were spoiled by offside play—as well as a penalty bully 10 minutes before time, which was successfully defended by West Christchurch. The winner’s forwards did not have many chances; but they showed good form, the side’s first goal coming irom a very fine movement initiated by the centre-half. The defence of both sides was the feature of the game, being very solid. There was a surprise in the AranuiPukaki game, for Pukaki, with only iour of iis regular prayers, held Aranui to a draw. Lost chances cost Aranui the game, but credit must go to punaici lor its fine positional play. In the other matches, Hornby, alter being beaten three limes on end, eauly beat Kiwi in a game in which neither side was at fuu strength, while at Kangiora, Digby’s gave tne home team an unexpectedly hard game, being beaten by only one goal m a high scoring match.
