EMPIRE GAMES EXPENSES DISCUSSED CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION MEETS A circular to be sent to all New Zealand rowing associations asking them to support Canterbury's application for the 1938 interprovlncial eights was read by the secretary, Mr R. J. Hobbs, at the meeting last evening of the Canterbury Rowing Association. The circular stated that the eights had not been held in Canterbury since 1929, and that the association felt it had a very strong claim. The president. Mr F. D. Kesteven, presided.

A letter was received from the New Zealand Rowing Association asking what share the Canterbury Association would guarantee towards the expenses of the crews to be sent to the Empire Games. It was stated that £4lO was required and this expense would have to be shared among the four associations. Mr L. C. Byers raised the question of the number to be sent, saying that he could see no reason to send both an eight and a four; it was a costly business. The men in the eight could make the four. Mr C. A. Stiles, one of the men selected to go to the Games, said he, thought it quite necessary to serd a separate four because the fours and eights might be rowed within half an hour of each other and it was not fair to ask men to row two races in such a short time. It was finally resolved that a letter be sent to the association stating that while the Canterbury Association was in favour of New Zealand beirg represented in all races, was it necessary for a separate four to be sent; and further, was it necesnecessary for two emergencies to be sent? sary to send a separate four, and was it The association felt that the money was going to be hard to find. Those present at the meeting were Messrs F. D. Kesteven (president), R. J Hobbs (secretary), L. C. Byers, C. A. Stiles, J. Sutherland. VV. G. Atack, C. A. Cooper, D. Lee, R. E. Nightingale, E. Velvin, W. H. Evans, and W. O. Poulton.
