DOG TRIALS

■ w OMIHI COLLIE CLUB OPENING DAY YESTERDAY Following Immediately on the Walkarl Collie Dog Club’s trials, which were finished on Saturday, the Omihi Collie Club commenced Its three-day meeting yesterday. The trials, as usual, were held on Mr J. K. McAlplne’s property at Spye. It is rather an exacting course on a fairly rough face, more so than usual this year because of the rank growth of grass : making it difficult for the dogs to pick the sheep up at times. A few bushes of 1 matagourl also Impeded the approach of the dogs to the sheep, and a gully on one side was another feature that helped to , make the course by no means an easy ; one. It brought out the versatility of the ■ dogs and proved a good test of their : capacity. The entries about constituted a record ■ in the 17 years of the club’s competitions. ' They came from all parts of the district 1 and from as far north as Seddon, in r Marlborough, and from Te Pirita, In the [ south. Both the owners from these two I districts figured in the result of the first f event, which was finished late yesterday 3 afternoon. The heavy entry was put through in sufficient time to enable a few - runs in the second class to be started. :. These will be continued to-day, and tne - meeting will end to-morrow. - The sheep were two-tooth Corrledaie - wethers supplied by Mr H. D. Greenwood. * Tevlotdale. They were a good strong lot. 1 and caused many flashes of good work. '• However, the work as a whole, apart from * that of the first six or eight dogs, was , rather indifferent. Some of the dogs had ? to be hunted out to their sheep, while ’• others headed and lifted in faulty manr ner. Generally the pulling was good, but s a number performed Indifferently at hold- ) Ing. Possibly the severity of the course \ was the main cause of this, as many of )' the dogs had performed particularly well at the Walkarl trials the previous week. The Judge was Mr J. S. Kennedy (of f} Rangiora), who provided useful charts of l i the running to the various competitors r An active committee, of which Mr R. L. i Symonds was chairman and Mr J. Millle gan secretary, conducted the trials very g capably, keeping the competitors well up to the time-table. • . „ _ . e The following was the result of the first 6 event: — 1 CLASS I (Open)— About 600 yards. Barber’s Mac—won the correspondy ing event at Waikari last Thursday. The j.’ third dog—D. W. Brown’s Scott—is from ,hj Seddon. and put up a promising perform’s ance for a young dog. This dog won the maiden event, ff Commenting on the performance of the :h placed dogs, the Judge said that the wln- -- ner took a good line on the outrun, but i" was rather straight at the head His oom- -- mand was good and he made a good lift in The dog was inclined to come, too fast on the pull, but kept a good line. Near the , ring he was not quite in position, but held well in the ring. The second dog— Barber’s Mac—made an indifferent run out and crossed his line. The head and lift , s were poor, but the dog made a good line ly in the pull, with good command. He was hj inclined to run about too much and to id nush his sheep too much in the ring. The t- third dog—Brown’s Scott—stopped several p- times on the outrun and had to be hunted S. He made a poor head, and did not take :r much notice of command. Made a good ring.
