DIET ELECTIONS IN JAPAN
Popular Apathy Shown * SOCIALISTS’ STRENGTH DOUBLED (imrrzD paisas association—copyright.) (Received May 2, 9.56 p.m.) TOKYO, May 1. The Diet elections met with 'apathy. The general feeling is that an appeal to the country is artificial. Early figures suggest an “as you were” position. The ahti-Govern-ment parties, the Liberal • Minseito and the agrarian Seiyu-kai, maintain their ’dominating position with 80 per cent, of the seats. The chief change is the doubling of the Socialists’ strength with the winning of 40 seats, [The strength of the parties in the Japanese House of Representatives before the election was as follows: Seiyu-kai 174 seats, Minseito 205, Showa-kai 19, Kokumin Domei (xiew Japan National League) 15, Shakai Taishu-to (Social Masses Party) 18, Independent 33. The Social Masses Party is the strongest of the minor parties in Japan, and Recording to one authority its ideal is “the destruction of capitalism and the emancipation of the proletariat.”]
