DUCK SHOOTING BEGINS
SEASON OPENS FAIRLY WELL SUCCESS OF MINISTERIAL PARTY The duck-sho6ting season has begun reasonably well, according to reports available from men who had returned to the city last night. Saturday morning was disappointing, but in the evening plenty of birds were about and most parties enjoyed good sport. A party of eight, which included the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. JR. Semple), the Minister for Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb), and the Hon. G. JR. Hunter, M.L.C., gathered a bag of 100 birds, shooting on the property of Mr J. P. McEvedy, of Little JRakaia. Few birds came over Lake Ellesmere on Saturday morning. Most of those seen were well out of range, and only one or two were brought down. There was a flat calm on the water, in contrast to the storm of the night before. With no wind or rough weather the birds remained in safety on the middle of the lake. The many sportsmen who were out had far belter sport in the evening. The party in which the Ministers shot had more birds within range than they could possibly bring down. Others enjoyed similar sport. Last evening the sky darkened rather early and cut short activities.
