The Hon. R. Semple, Minister for Public Works, the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister for Mines, and the Hon. G. R. Hunter, M.L.C., spent the week-end duck shooting as guests of Mr J. P. McEvedy, of Little Rakaia. They will return for a further day’s sport to-day if the weather is favourable for shooting. The Hon. Mr Justice Northcroft will leave to-day to preside over sittings of the Supreme Court at Timaru. The session will probably occupy a week. Mr J. W. K. Lawrence has returned from’the North Island. Mr John Froud, College House, will succeed the Rev. R. P. Taylor as curate in Fendalton on his ordination shortly. Mr Taylor is to leave for England in October to continue advanced study. Wing Commander the Hon. R. A. Cochrane, Chief of the Air Staff, arrived from Wellington yesterday morning by the steamer express. Mr C. Morgan Williams, M.P., returned from the north yesterday morning. Mr M. Silverstone, Dunedin, a director of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, was a passenger from Wellington on Saturday morning. The Hon. P. Waite. M.L.C., Otago, arrived from Wellington on Saturday morning. Bishop Pitchett, Dunedin, returned from the North Island by the steamer express on Saturday morning. Mr W. F. Blackwell returned from-Welling-ton on Saturday. Mr F. C, D. Taylor has been admitted to membership of, the New Zealand Society of Accountants. Mr R. A.Barnsdale. manager of the National Bank of New Zealand. Ltd., Christchurch, who has been visiting Wellington, returned to Christchurch yesterday morning. Members of this Ruapuna Domain Board have been Appointed as follows: Messrs T. Bennett, J. H. Boaler, R. W. Holland, R. Lane, R. A. McLay, H. A. Moore, and G. W. Ross. Mr William A. Moir has been appointed an honorary child welfare officer for the Christchurch district. Mr J. P. Perry, a retired Viennese banker, who is visiting New Zealand on a holiday trip, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. He will leave for the south to-day. Mr W. Hulbert, chief engineer of the mission motor-yacht Southern Cross, is a former Christchurch resident, his lather, Mr C. P, Hulbert, having been Mayor of Christchurch in 1884 and 1885. The family resided in Gloucester street, Linwood, and Mr Hulbert attended the East Christchurch School. As a marine engineer, he has travelled in most parts of the world. The Rev. F. V. Fisher, vicar of Mornington for the last seven years, has been appointed to the parish of Addington, He will assume duty in July, when the Rev. J. S. Cooper will transfer to Lower Riccarton as vicar, succeeding the Rev. R. de Lambert, who has resigned because of continued ill-health. Mr A. L. M. Perry returned to London last week after spending seven months in the United States in pursuance of the terms of the Carnegie Fellowship which he was awarded last year. For a portion of the time he studied modern developments in education at Stanford University, California. He travelled widely through.America, visiting schools and discussing problems with leading educationists and sociologists. Jn January he spent a ski-ing holiday in the Yosemite National Park, and returned to New York by the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls. He is now. writing a report to be submitted to the New Zealand Council for Educational Research on New Zealand secondary education, for use in the proposed reorganisation in New Zealand. He.will return to New Zealand on August 25.
