BRITISH HARD-COURT TITLES WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONS BEATEN (Received May 2, 9 p.m.) LONDON, May 1. G. P. Hughes and C. R. D. Tuckey, Wimbledon doubles champions and Great Britain’s Davis Cup doubles pair for the last, two years, were beatenjn the final of the British hard-court doubles championship at 1 Eastbourne by the young players, C. E. Hare ana F. H. D. Wilde. The latter’s success enhances their chances of selection in the Davis Cup team. Results were! — , .. Men’s Singles—Final: H. W. Austin beat H. G. N. Lee, 6-2, 6 : 2 6-0. Women’s Singles—Semi-final: Senorita Anita Lizana (Chile) beat Miss D. E. Round, 6-4, 6-2. Final: Senorita Lizana beat Miss McScriyen, 7-5, 6-3. Men’s Doubles —Final: C. E. Hare and F. H. D. Wilde beat G. P. Hughes and C. R. D. Tuckey, 6-2, 6-4, 7-9, 6-4.. WINTER COMPETITION , OPENS FIRST ROUND MATCHES PLAYED Although fewer teams have entered for the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association s men’s inter-club winter competition this year, the standard of play in the first round matches at Wilding Park on Saturday was good, and in spite of Elmwood s slight superiority on the day’s play, the competition should be keenly fought. Nine teams have entered, compared with 12 last year. The results were;— North Beach B. a bye. ELMWOOD v. WOOLSTON - Singles B, E. Souter beat H. Hill,- 6-1, 6-1. M. J. Souter beat R. Lyon, 6-4, 6-2. W. P. Jones lost to A. Lee, 3-6, 2-6. A. Fraser beat A. Parish, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Doubles Souter and Souter beat Hill and Lyons, 6-3, 6-1. Jones and Fraser beat Lee and Parish, 6-5. 6-5. Elmwood won by 5 matches to 1. AVONSIDE v. CANTERBURY COLLEGE Singles H. A. Booth beat M. Averts, 6-1, 6-1. E. McGregor beat R. H. W. Rainey, 6-4, 3 1v. G. Hill beat I. Dick,. 6-4, 6-2. T. Callender beat H. Bauchop, 6-1, 6-1. Doubles McGregor and Hill beat Rainey and Dick, 6-3, 6-5. Booth and Callender beat Bauchop and Averts, 6-0, 6-1. Avonslde won by 6 matches to 0. EDGEWARE v. ADDINGTON CATHOLIC Singles , W. McD. Anderson beat V. M. Consedlne, W, A. Clothier beat N. J. Watson, 6-2, 6-4. A. D. Sandman beat A. Handisides, 6-0, 6-4. A. F. Wilson beat A. A. Fraser, 6-1, 6-0. Doubles Anderson and Clothier beat Consedlne and Handisides, 6-1, 6-1. Sandman and Wilson beat Watson and Fraser, 6-2, 5-6, 6-2. Edgeware won by 6 matches to 0. NORTH BEACH A v. LINWOOD Singles M. McGilllvray beat H. R, Escott, 6-5, 1-6, 6-4. D. Meier beat W. H. Jury, 6-4, 6-2. K. Hardie lost to Mansfield, 3-6, 2-6, N. Walsh lost to R. Beverley, 2-6, 1-6.
