NEW CHAPEL AT LORETO
BISHOP BRODIE GIVES BLESSING Solemn blessing of the new chapel of the Loreto boys’ school, Papanui, was given yesterday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by Bishop Brodie, assisted by the Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy and visiting clergy. A large gathering of friends of the school and representatives from various educational institutions was later addressed by the Rev. Father J. Hanrahan, parish priest of Papanui, who extended a welcome on behalf of the Sisters of Mercy, to the Bishop and visitors. Bishop Brodie. in congratulating the sisters on the completion of the chapel, spoke of the influence which the school had in moulding the character of young students. He recalled the early history of the school and paid a generous tribute to the assistance given in the early days, by the late Father Gilbert. Very Rev. Father Dowling, Rector of St. Bede’s College, spoke with appreciation of the training given at Loreto and of the debt which the college owed to the preparatory school. Other speakers were the Rev. Dr. Kennedy. Father O’Connor, and Dr. Qeaney. The Hon. W. Hayward and Mr Peter O’Connell spoke on behalf of the Roman Catholic laity. The afternoon concluded with solemn benediction in the new chanel.
