STUD SHEEP EXPORT

HEAVY SHIPMENTS

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DEMAND

The Waitaki. which sailed from Lyttelton on Thursday, carried a big consignment of Canterbury stud sheep to South Australia. O. Rennie (Doyleston) and 84 Border Leicester ram iambs from R. coiee 'Tfurther'consignment for Australia will be shipped on May 20. ■ Both this week's shipments were -elected by .the stud stock department o' the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN

PURCHASES

The "Australasian" of April 24 records that four consignments of highclass stud Southdowns, including a stud ram and 75 stud ewes, have recently arrived in Western Australia from New Zealand, and with these consignments the total number of stud Southdowns which have already arrived in Western Australia to date this year has reached 274 head. The New Zealand purchases totalled 60 head of mated stud ewes, and these came from three breeders, all well-known stud men- in the Dominion. The largest draft was one of 24 young stud ewes from Mr J. Brooks, of Irwell, Canterbury, while from Mr W. J. Jenkins, Fairfield, Sheffield, came a consignment of 22 head. The remaining 14 in the draft for Mr Kelsall's Exmoor stud were drawn from Mr W. O. Rennie's Rushbrook stud at Doyleston. A small consignment also came from Mr J. Young, of Feilding. All four consignments were outstanding for their uniformity of type, and it is pleasing to see Southdowns of this duality ccming into the west, states the writer.

THE BEEF MARKET

NORTH ISLAND PRICES

A good market for prime beef at Addington has the undesired effect very often of attracting cattle from the North Island. Up till 1 a year or two ago Addington prices were a magnet for North Island fatteners, and it did not take many outside cattle to cause a sag in the market. Fortunately, however, as a result of the inroads made on the best Hawke's Bay cattle by the chilled beef shipments, the ordinary excess was reduced and prices in the province advanced to near a parity with those at Addington, or at all events to a point where there was no margin to pay transport costs. This has resulted in a stabilising of the Addington market to the southern grower. Prices have remained sufficiently firm of late to raise the question of whether there is a probable margin for the trade this winter. Current prices at the Hawke's Bay sales would not appear to suggest so. At the Hastings market this week good weighty bullocks made from £ll to £l3 7s 6d, a show animal returning £l4. On the figures of estimated weights and prices the best of the bullocks appeared to have made about 27s 6d per 1001 b. Good heifers sold at from £9 to £lO ss. The northern heifers would probably be a better class than .those offered at Addington except in a few cases, and making allowance for this it would seem that this class of beef is selling at only a few shillings per 1001 b less than at Addington. There is not enough margin in these figures to encourage business to any extent. The margin for shipment has generally been estimated at from £3 10s to £4 a head, and on a weighty bullock of the type sent down from the north the difference per 1001 b would need to be nearer Bs.

WAIKARI DOG TRIALS

THIRD DAY'S EVENTS

The Waikari dog trials were continued yesterday. The weather was dull and late on in the afternoon misty rain fell. Nevertheless there was a good attendance. The second event on the programme, which was commenced the previous day, was concluded, the following being the prizewinners:— CLASS ll.—Heading, Bring Back, and Yard. About 300 yards. Time, 9min. Open class. First £l2, second £6, third £3, and fourth £1; 62 entries. Points. R. M. Wilson's Fly .. ..58 1 A. N. Barber's Mac .. .. 56 2 W. J. Hawker's Bruce .. 55J 3 A. C. Shand's Toby .. 54£ 4 The judge, Mr C. Hay, commenting on the work, said that R. M. Wilson's Fly put up a first-class run from start to finish. The run would have been hard to beat at any trial, including the cham-

pionships. A. N. Barber's Mac also put up a very good performance, and the others were not far behind. MAIDEN (run in conjunction with open). First £6, second £3, third *.i. »» entries. _ . . Points. M. Wilson's Fly put up an exceedingly good run and was easily the best of the four. A. \N. Barber's dog had the misfortune to have very touchy sheep, and stubborn at the pen, where his chances were lost. The other two dogs put up good work under different conditions. Commenting on the work at the trials generally, the judge remarked that it was quite equal to that seen at North Island trials. In the huntaway class that»day there had been some excellent runs. The dogs were first-class huntaways—true to type and work, strong noise, force, and natural huntaway qualities. Mrs H. T. Little's special of a silver cup to dogs scoring most points in classes I. and 11. was won by A. Shand with Toby, with 1091 points, and Mr Shand's special of a dog kennel for district dog mustering on country above 2000 feet, was won by A. L. Trumper's Moss, with 521 points. In the third class—huntaway with slew —23 dogs completed their runs yesterday, leaving 42 to complete to-day. This will be* followed by class IV.—the huntaway, head, bring back, and hold—which will complete the programme. The weather last night did not look promising for today.
