TRIBUTES FROM BENCH AND BAR

♦ RETIRING CLERK OF COURT Before the Magistrate's Court session began yesterday morning opportunity was taken by members of Bench and Bar to pay tribute to the retiring Clerk of Court, Mr J. Mclndoe. Mr K. M. Gresson spoke on behalf of the legal profession and Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., on behalf of the MagistYß. tcS. Mr Gresson said he did not think the title Clerk of Court adequately conveyed an idea of the nature and responsibility of the work it involved. Mr Mclndoe during his long career, and particularly in the position from which he was now retiring, was responsible for a multitude of matters besides those of which the legal profession generally was aware. In dealing with the very large amount of business going through his office Mr Mclndoe had displayed an efficiency which had been of very real assistance to those with whom he worked. In his retirement he took with him the good wishes of the whole of the legal profession, and its thanks for his unfailing courtesy, particularly for his special acts of kindness to young members of the profession. Mr Levvey said that the Magistrates had already had an opportunity personally to offer Mr Mclndoe their appreciation and good wishes. The Court desired now to be associated with Mr Gresson in his remarks, which it fully endorsed. Mr Mclndoe said his aim had always been to assist the people who used the Court. Early in his career with the Department o'f Justice it had been impressed upon him that the Magistrate's Court was the people's Court and that it was the duty of the Court staff to assist the people. This he had endeavoured to do. He had always enjoyed happy relations with members of the Bar. He thanked th,em for their good wishes. '
