RISING PRICES

TO THB EOITOB Of' THB PRESS. Sir,—lf you will grant me a little space I would like to comment on this very vexed question of rising prices. In your issue this morning you gave the motoring public of Christchurch another jar below the belt, "Petrol up another penny." Ned Kelly had nothing on this Government. The mug motorist is again picked out as the bird who never squarks, no matter how many feathers are pulled out of his tail. It is high time we had an association, a real, live one, not one which stands by and sees its members robbed. The motoring public took Mr Sempje's 5s touch with a smile; this gave Mr Sullivan the courage to again put the nips in, I should like to ask Mr Semple and Mr Sullivan just how much the motoring section of New Zealand contributes by way of taxation to the Government. We heard such a lot before and just after the election, about all the wonderful things the Labour Government was going to do. It did not tell us that it was going to increase the price of everything. I state here and now that the workers of New Zealand are worse off now than they were 12 months ago. I know because I am one of the workers. My wages have gone up about 6s a week, but what use is this when the average household uses 120 items on which the increase is about one penny, a gain of six shillings and a loss of 10s —a fair, dinkum Irishman's rise.— Yours, etc., FED UP. April 27, 1937.
