LONG SERVICE COMPLETED
SUPERINTENDENT OF PRISON RETIRES i (I'JIESS ASSOCIATION TEI.EGH.AiI.) WELLINGTON, April 30. At the Wellington prison to-night, the staff met to say farewell to the superintendent. Mr John Down) who is retiring after 40 years' service with the Prisons Department. An armchair was presented to Mr Down on behalf of the staff by Mr B. L. Dallard, Con-troller-General of Prisons, and a clock was presented by Mr A. Longmbre on behalf of the Wellington Justices' Asociation. Mr Down has had -wide experience in the Prisons Department. He was in charge of tree-planting camps at Hanmer and Waiotapu, and also in charge of parties which opened up the Waikeria and Hautu prison farms. He was largely instrumental in starting the nursery of native shrubs on Mount Crawford, which is being developed to replant Watt's peninsula in co-operation with the Wellington Beautifying Society. Mr Down's successor Mr W. E. Stewart, at present chief warder of the Wellington prison.
