RACING AND TROTTING

L ATEST NEWS FROM FAR AND NEAR

Queen, by Mosqueton (son of Carbine) from Minting Queen, by Minting, while Hybla, raced by his breeder, Mr E. Lee Steere, chairman of the club committee, .is by Treat from Maple, who,, in Mr Lee Steere's colours, won among other races the Caulfield cup. Jungle Lady is one of the most improved two-year-olds racing in Western Australia, and her Sires' Produce Stakes win was her fourth success in five starts. It was in the third of these races she missed a place, but a cold was blamed. TROTTING NOTES Reminders The next meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association will be held at 7.30 p.m. on April 30. Nominations for the Oamaru Trotting Club's winter meeting will close next Monday at 8 p.m. A payment of £1 for the New Zealand Derby, to be run at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's spring meeting, will fall due on May 1 at noon. Acceptances for the Kaikoura Trotting Club's meeting will close at 9 p.m. next Monday. A Promising' Pacer Lord Zetland has been nominated for both the Kaikoura Trotting Club and Oamaru Jockey Club meetings to be held next week, but it is almost certain he will make the southern trip. Lord Zetland, a two-year-old by Man o' War—Harold Dillon mare, is owned by the Christchurch sportsman, Mr B. Lee, who has made several ventures in the light harness sport without much success. Lord Zetland, however, is a very promising youngster, and may make amends for other disappointments in the stable. Well-Bred Trotter Shadeland, a well-bred trotter by Guy Parrish—Belle Bingen, is owned by M. B. Edwards, but is trained by F. J. Clark. This gelding shows a lot of promise, but apparently needs a good deal of racing experience. He is bred the right way, and a trip to Kaikoura may do him a lot of good. A Coming Sire The imported stallion Grattan Loyal was not a great success in his first season at the stud, but in this respect he is not different from many other American horses. His second crop of fcals. however, are much better than the first lot, and in the four-year-old filly Grattan "Girl, he has something above the average to represent him. Grattan Girl on Saturday last won the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap at the Manawatu meeting, and paced a mile and a half in 3min 32sec. She won very easily in time distinctly creditable on a track not prepared for pacers. Choice, the dam of Grattan Girl, is by Logan Pointer from Tit Bits by Prince Imperial—Bequest, by Galindo. With the success of a number of Southland-bred pacers, "Grattan Loyal will be popular with breeders during the coming season. At Epsom Training operations at Epsom on Tuesday were brightened when F. J. Smith arrived from Takanini with a team of eight horses, comprising Nervie's Last, King's Guide, Mountain Flight, Frank Best, Swordsman, Vain Lad. Crocus, and Cash Down. AH were worked two heats. King's Guide and Nervie's last were marshalled for their second run, in which Star Pronto joined issue, and spectators were treated to a great bout in the final stages between the free-legged Australian pair, Nervie's i Last and Star Pronto. King's Guide ! broke after going a mile, and was left well behind. The unhoppled pair ran the last quarter stride for stride in 32 3-ssec, Star Pronto going 3min 37 sec, and Nervie's Last 3min 39sec for the mile and a half. Swordsman, who trotted very solidly gave Vain Lad three seconds and a a beating in 3min 45sec, trotting the last half mile in lmin 10 2-ssec The novice, Crocus, attracted attention by beating Frank Best over a mile in 2mm the last half mile in lmin 9sec. In his second effort he shaded Cash Down and Charteris Bay over 10 SJ™? n| ?Ki n 3min , 3sec . half mile comfortably in lmin Usee. ■ Munga Tangi beat Lucky Love over 10 furlongs in 2min 56sec, the last half mile in lmin lOsec. f„ G ?u a Da , y ' who trotted 3min 45sec in th« e < m ' l t a , nd 3 m half ' WaS to O gOOd hL. tl l e 1 5 n . lsh , fo r True Trust, trotting her half m lmin lOsec. The surprise of the morning came from the maiden Kewpie's Bingen, who beat Forest fn 3m, : n G 9 r d i? ge u r ' and , Kewpie's Crist m 3min 2sec. He has only had two races and is improving. TURF GOSSIP i

y Reminder JNominations for the Amberley Rac- j ing Club's annual meeting will close t at 5 p.m. to-morrow at the Canter- I bury Jockey Club's office. c Jumping at Riccarton j There was a good amount of jifmp- j ing at Riccarton yesterday. £ Over Hurdles Nightbound (D. O'Connor) jumped r four hurdles well. l Royal Limond. with his trainer up, \ was sent over four hurdles in company with the novice Flashlight. The former ( is to race in tho hurdle event at Ash- . burton before resuming steeplechasing . in the North Island. Full Throttle (E. Jennings) jumped L two pony hurdles safely, but when * taken for an attempt over the bigger F obstacles, with Nocturnus as a mate, l he crashed through the first and lost i his rider, after which he was again put over the pony fences. •, Primak' (G. Ridgway), assisted by <. Pahu, and Lustral . (W. Rickerby) j shaped satisfactorily over the pony i hurdles. f Jolly Beggar (R. Smith) gave another 4 brilliant display over six hurdles. ( Giggleswick (Smith) also negotiated , four hurdles in a pleasing manner. J A Country Novice ] Streamline (H. Turner) was sent 1 once round over the steeplechase J fences. He was kept to a hunting pace i and did not make any mistakes. : A Present to Trainer < j An addition to J. E. Pike's team at ] Randwick is the three-year-old geld- < ing, The Palmist (Chief Ruler—Timid), , who was recently trained by W. Booth. ] Before Mr E. Norton's departure for ( England, he made him a present to Pike for' the remainder of his racing ' career. The Palmist, who is a big gelding and has scored three minor ' placings in seven starts this season. £ should at least prove useful. \ A Big List ' For Randwick there are 101 licensed bookmakers for the paddock, 122 for the Leger, 132 for the flat, and 14 others are eligible lor licences at other courses. • <: .; That makes a total of 369, which is much below the number of a few : years ago. There is no means of as- ' certaining the number of starting-price \ bookmakers who carry on business. : Excessive Taxation The position of racing in Sydney is i the cause of some anxiety among the : authorities. The committee of the Aus- ; tralian Jockey Club had good reason | for believing the crowds would be larger at the autumn meeting than j was the case last Easter, and made ; substantial increases to the stakes. The ] expectations, however, were not rea- j lised, as the aggregate attendance for ] the four days was about 5000 less than : it was a year ago. It was a surprising < result, because Sydney was full of < visitors, and the weather on each of i the four days .was ideal. "Chiron," of ( the "Australasian," comments on this : situation as follows: There does not ] seem to be much prospect of racing \ making any headway and regaining its old prosperity: in Sydney until the * sport is relieved of some of the bur- j den of taxation it is carrying, and an ] effort is made, to; reduce the volume , of starting-price betting. The new leg- < islation in Queensland has worked ' wonders for racing and the clubs, and ] unless something of a similar nature is ' done in New South Wales, and done ' very soon, there is not much chance of racing becoming prosperous. The sport is being slowly but surely strangled by, excessive taxation and off-the-course betting. A Novel Scheme To stimulate steeplechasing at major race tracks in the New-York area, r 3B millionaire turf enthusiasts pooled £IB,OOO for the „ importation of 33 French jumpers. On the arrival of the horses .their names were tossed into a hat and each subscriber became the owner of the horse he drew. Only three tracks in the.. New York area, namely Belmont, Saratoga, and Aque- < ducf. stage jumping' races. The num- ( ber of top-flight performers had become so small that hurdle fields usually ] pared down to four or five mounts. Improvements at Caulfield ' When it' comes to improving racing , conditions, the Victoria Amateur Turf Club can be. expected to lead the way, and' it has embarked on an improvement scheme, which, when completed ] will certainly make Caulfield the-great-est course in Australia, says a Melbourne writer. The new scheme will cost £50,000 It embraces the construction of-the extension of the grandstand and guineas enclosure, and also a new totalisator All modern conveniences, will be installed in these, buildings, and nothing : finer will be found in Australia. J Another Agxion Winner Two Western Australian-bred youngsters, Jungle Lady and Hybla, were first and second in the Western Australia Turf Club's Sires' Produce Stakes, ; with the New South Walesbred Vaurien, by Veilmond. third. Jungle Lady is by Agrion from Brown ;

CRICKET

LOSS TO CANTERBURY TRANSFER OF C. K. JACKMAN Canterbury cricket will suffer a severe loss next season through the transfer to Auckland of C. K. Jackman, Canterbury, South Island, and New Zealand representative wicketkeeper, and a member of the management committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association. Jackman has Deen

Canterbury's best wicketkeeper for the last three seasons, and he gained his international cap in the test matches against E. R. T. Holmes's Marylebone Cricket Club team last season. Jackman was one of the unlucky men when the New Zealand team to tour England this year was chosen. Had wicketkeeping ability alone counted, Jackman could hardly have been excluded, for at his best he as one of the most brilliant stumpers seen in New Zealand for a long time. As a batsman, however, he has not-justified himself in representative cricket, though in club games for Old Collegians, and this season for Riccarton, he has made some good scores by aggressive methods.
