DISPUTE ON KAREPO NOT SETTLED

«, MEN'S REQUEST TO BE PAID OFF REFUSED CfBXSS ASSOCIATION TBLEOHAM.) . DUNEpiN. April 21. The dispute on the cargo vessel Karepo is still unsettled and the vessel is still held up. It is understood that the trouble is due to the dissatisfaction of the deckhands about certain officers on the steamer. Members of the crew said to-day that the real cause of the dispute was thai the Union Steam Ship Company had refused their request that they should be paid oft on Monday morning. On the arrival of the vessel on Sunday morning, they had given 24 hours' notice of intention to terminate their engagement. The company, however, had refused to accept the notice and consequently the hold-up was not the fauW of the deckhands. The men said thev did not desire to disclose the reason for their request to be paid off. but added that under certain conditions they would be prepared to go to sea They claimed that their action did not constitute a refusal to man the ship.
