KING GEORGE V MEMORIAL

* ORGANISING CAMPAIGN ' FOR FUND ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR CHRISTCHURCH A strongly-organised campaign for subscriptions from Christchurch towards the King George V Memorial Fund is planned by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland) and members of the Qhristchurch Health Stamp Committee. It is the intention of the New Zealand Government to establish permanently two health camps in the Dominion for children, one in each island, and an appeal for subscriptions to the fund has been issued by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M.-, J. Savage). The Govern■ment has promised to contribute £25,000 to this cause, and has agreed to subsidise £ for £ the amount received above £50,000 —this sum including the Government's initial contribution. The Mayor said yesterday that the Government's proposal was an admirable one, and he felt that the citizens of Christchurch should give it their ' strongest support. Much fuller success would attend the appeal, however, if it was backed by organisation, and he was more than willing to ask the city to give freely to the fund. In his opinion the response from Christchurch up to the present indicated that there was considerable scope for organisation. The merit of the appeal could be brought much more vividly before the public if a plan of campaign was worked out, and he had accordingly arranged for a public meeting to be held in the City Council Chambers next Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. He anticipated that the City Council would make a substantial grant to the fund at its next meeting, and thus give a lead to the public. The Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) had advised that he would attend the meeting on Monday and speak on behalf of the. Government. The response from Christchurch should be worthy of the city, which had in the past shown practical sympathy for deserving causes, and he hoped that the attendance at the meeting on Monday would be strong enough to give the movement the vigorous start that was essential to success.
