A BRILLIANT GATHERING

POLO BALL It is many years since there has been a polo ball in Christchurch; but the Christchurch Polo Club’s re-entry last night into the social life of the city was so successful that it is safe to prophesy that the members will decide to make the ball an annual affair. Last night’s ball, attended by more than 300 guests, was held at the Winter Garden, where the ballroom was appropriately decorated with polo sticks, helmets, jackets, and topical cartoons. The supper room was furnished as a comfortable lounge ( and a buffet supper was served in a large gaily decorated marquee. Music was played by the Bailey-Marston orchestra. Grigg, model frock of deep prune taffeta shot with gold; Mrs Gordon McCredie, trained frock of dusky begonia crepe with inset bow of velvet to match on the front of the bodice: Lady Stewart, back matalasse studded all over with rhinestones, and finished with shoulder straps and belt of rhinestones; Mrs R. B. DINNER PARTY Before the polo ball last night, a very cheery dinner party, arranged by Miss Rose Hutton, was held at the New City Hotel, and afterwards the guests went to the ball. GIFT PARTY Mrs Nelson Blackler and her sister, Miss Vera Bowes, were joint hostesses at a “kitchen” gift party held at the home of Mrs Blackler (Ryan street) in honour of Miss Eunice Baker, whose marriage will take place shortly. The time was spent in games and competitions, and the guest of honour received many gifts for use in the kitchen of her new home. Those present were Mesdames G. T. Baker, A. Dykes, sen., E. L. Bowes, A. Dykes, jun., Canning, Tout, Fairman, Misses Eunice Baker, M. Heape, K. Dykes, P. Christie, Muschamp, Sinclair, and Martin. SCHOOL COMMITTEE’S DANCE To raise funds for their school, members of the Broadfleld School Cpmmitte held a dance in the Prebbleton Hall. There was a good attendance of visitors, and dance music was supplied by Les Kinsman’s Band. Extras were played by Miss Stella Dow, and novelty dances were won by Miss Kathleen Henry and partner, and Miss Nancy* Gallagher and partner. In the card room, prizes were won by Mesdames L. Gallagher and W, Downey, Messrs A. Giles and H. Prebble. Mr J. T. Gallagher and Mr R. Wheeler were masters of ceremonies. Those present were Mesdames R. Wheeler, G. Rutherford, G. Simpson, J. T.
