OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM KIELY

"■ TKe • death occurred at Auckland of Mir' William Kiely, proprietor of the Victoria Hotel, Westport. Mr Kiely was in Auckland visiting his mother, who is seriously ill. Before making his home in Westport Mr Kiely was for 14 years a marine engineer oh the Canopus and was very well known on the New Zealand coast. He was born in Dunedin and was 50 years of age. He is survived by his wife.

RUGBY TEAM AT TIROROA

PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEES TO PLAY IN COMPETITION

The Public Works Department employees on the Buller Gorge railway construction works expect to be able to enter a senior football team in the Buller Rugby competitions during the coming season. Mr Douglas Hudson, of the engineering staff, who was a member of the New Zealand University team that toured Japan last year, is keenly interested in the proposed Tiroroa team, and under his direction volunteer "working bees" have been clearing the growth from the old playing field so that the team will have a practice ground. There is every indication that the new team will give a good account of itself.

PLUNKET SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING OF GREY BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Grey branch of the Plunket Society was held recently, with Mrs J. O'Brien presiding over an attendance of 10. A motion of sympathy, with Mrs Wilde in. the death' of her mother was passed. The nurses' reports for January wer e:—Greymouth: Visits to homes, 163; visits to office: adults 264, babies 213, older children 75; total 552. Outstations: Visits to homes, 153; visits to office, adults 222. babies 195, older children. 46; total 463.

THE BULLER SHOW

Further arrangements for the coming Agricultural and Pastoral show at Westport were made at a meeting of the general committee of the association. Mr M; Durkin presided. JVlessrs R. Donaldson, D. Moir, and H. Bennett were elected members. It was decided to thank Mr Hollis for his offer of a bullock for a weightguessing competition. Messrs W. Keating and J. H. Enright were appointed to confer with the Westport Owners' and Breeders' Association about the trotting events.

DENNISTON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE '

Mrs J. Allan presided over a large attendance of members of the Denniston Women's Institute at a meeting in the schoolroom. Visitors were present from the Marshallvale branch. Mrs D. Edmonds gave a lecturette on home nursing. The latter part of the evening was spent in dancing and music. The following gave items:—Mesdames R. Anderson,, G. Warne, G. Saunders, and J. Philp. .

HOKITIKA JUNIOR LIBRARY

The Hokitika Junior Library, which has been closed for some weeks, because of Health Department restrictions, will reopen to-day.

SOCIAL GATHERING AT REEFTON WESLEY CHURCH MEMBERS HONOURED In honour of their recent marriage, Mr and Mrs H. Spargo were met by the congregation of Wesley Church, Reefton. and entertained at a social evening. . Mr Spargo is an offlcebearer of the church, and Mrs Spargo has. been associated' with the work or the church at Maori Hill. They were welcomed by Mr A. Bolitho. The Rev. C. Dickens, in presenting Mr and Mrs Spargo with a seagrass chair, extended to them the good wishes of all the congregation. Miss Evelyn Thompson, a member of the church and a Sunday school teacher, who will leave soon for Christchurch to enter the Teachers Training College, was presented with a handbag as a token of appreciation from the young people and the congregation of the church. ■ ■ Musical items were given by.Misses Read, Honey (2), and Potter, and Mrs Kearns, and Mr Robinson. INANGAHUA A. AND P. ASSOCIATION SHOW ABANDONED FOR THIS YEAR The committee of the Inangahua Agricultural and Pastoral Association met. with Mr J. B. Discaciati presiding in the absence of the president (Mr W. B. Auld). It was decided not to hold the annual show this year, because of the extremely bad season for. gardeners. Mr H, Campbell was appointed secretary pro tem. Thee annual meeting was postponed until August. LICENSING OF TRANSPORT The No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority will hold a sitting in Holtitika on February 22 and 23. There are 21 applications, including nine new applications for goods services.

FURTHER FLOOD DAMAGE

HOKITIKA RIVER OVERFLOWS

The two floods last week caused further damage to Malfroy/s bridge, Hokitika.one of the piers of the older part of the bridge being scoured out. Although the temporarv repairs have been made a considerable expenditure will be needed to place the bridge in satisfactory order for traffic requirements when dredging begins at Arahura. *

The -Hqkitika river again overflowed at Koiterangi, and did further damage at Camelback, where protective works are in hand.

HOKITIKA SPORTS CLUB

The Hokitika Sports Club has decided to hold a sports gathering on Cass square on the Wednesday after Easter Monday. The club decided tc ask the borough council to make some improvements in the cycling track. It was reported that special train arrangements had been made.

BULLER CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

Dancing occupied most of the evening at the Buller Caledonian Society's monthly ingleside held in the Orange Hall. Messrs M. J. Mathewson, G. Blair, and A. Murphy were masters of ceremonies, and dance music was played by Mrs Curtis. During the evening items were given as follows:—Recitations, "Packing the Trunk for the Seaside" and "Spiders, Miss Radford; baritone solos, "Gipsy Love Song" and "Ole Man River," Mr L. Brown; and songs, "Danny Boy and "Two Wistful Eyes," Miss Jean Chamberlain. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Chamberlain.

MINER INJURED AT WALLSEND

Cyril Shirley, a trucker, of Greymouth, while working in the Wallsend mine, inj ured 'his right foot, when he was run over by three empty trucks. After being treated by Dr. Fitzgerald, he was taken to the Grey River Hospital.
