OFFICIAL FORECASTS

[THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON. January 31. The Dominion Observatory's weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows: — Light to moderate south-westerly winds prevailing; weather fair to cloudy, with rising temperatures; seas slight to moderate. The official Dominion forecast is:— Weather for the most part fine with rising temperatures, but a few passing auowers at first on the western and southern coasts of the South Island, later becoming cloutiy on the east coast. An anti-cyclone still covers the Tasman Sea. Pressure has risen considerably over the , Dominion, but is still rather low to the south-east. Winds—South-west to southerly prevailing, still strong in some exposed rjositions. but decreasing, and elsewhere light to moderate. Seas (New Zealand waters) —Rather rough to rough about Cook and Foveaux straits, but gradually decreasing and elsewhere slight to modsrats. Eastern Tasman Sea—Light to moderate southerly winds and slight to moderate seas. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER With a maximum temperature of more than 70 degrees on both Saturday and yesterday, the week-end in Christchurch was fine and warmThere was a very strong wind from the west en Saturday, but it had moderated yesterday morning, and in the afternoon there was a fresh wind from the east. Last evening was fine and cool. At 1 o'clock this morning the sky was cloudy and there was no wind. The temperature was 54 degrees and the barometer, rising steadily, registered 30.03 inches. Total for corresponding period last year, 184 hours 35 minutes. Total for corresponding period 1935, 214 hours 10 minutes. IN OTHER PLACES Auckland —There was a strong southwesterly wind on Saturday. The sky was cloudy and temperatures were cool. The wind moderated during the night, but was blowing fresh from the south-west again yesterday morning. There were longer intervals of sunshine yesterday and the barometer, which was rising steadily, reached 30in at midnight and remained steady. Wellington—A strong and squally westerly wind blew on Saturday, bu' the weather was otherwise brilliantly fine, with few clouds. During yesterday the wind decreased and the weather remained fine and sunny. The minimum temperature on Saturday morning was 56.1 degrees and on Sunday morning 55.0 degrees. The'maximum temperature on Saturday was 69.2 degrees and 68.4 on Sunday. The temperature at 3 p.m. on Sunday was 67.1 degrees. Dunedin—There was a fresh breeze from the south-west on Saturday, but the sun shone throughout the day and ; the temperature rose to 68 degrees. The j barometer, was rising.
