STATE HOUSING SCHEME
GOVERNMENT ACCEPTS TENDERS
ANNOUNCEMENT BY PRIME
MINISTER
(I’HESS ASSOCIATION TKLEOiI.UI.)
WELLINGTON, January 29.
The first series of tenders connected with the Government’s - housing proposals was announced by the Prime Minister (the Ht. Hon. M. J. Savage) to-day. The successful tenderer for the supply of joinery was the Fletcher Construction Company, Ltd. For 19 separate housing contracts 35 tenders were received, the successful ones being the Fletcher Construction Company and Higgins and Arcus. Mr Savage mentioned several factors in the contracts that make it impossible to arrive at their exact figure; but he said there was no doubt that the rents to be charged would compare more than favourably with rentals being asked to-day. He said also that these houses would set a new standard for working-class housing in New Zealand.
