PUBLIC LIBRARY CONTROL
TRANSFER TO CITY
NO AGREEMENT MADE YET
No agreement has been made between the City Council and the Canterbury University College Council to transfer control of the Public Library to the city. This was made clear by the chairman of the City Council’s finance committee (Cr. E. H. Andrews) last night, when he was commenting on a report that such an agreement had been reached, and that the transfer would probably take place next year.
Towards the end of last year, the City Council agreed to place £IOOO on the estimates of the coming financial year as a grant to the library. At that stage of the negotiations between the two bodies, there were three major issues for agreement—the allocation of endowments, the representation to be given to the College Council on the governing body, and the action to be taken by the City Council in providing a new reference section, at a cost of about £IO,OOO.
Since then,, there have begn no negotiations whatever between the two councils. This was emphasised by Cr. Andrews. “There has been absolutely no decision made to take over control of the library,” he added.
