DETAILS OF UNFULFILLED ORDERS SOUGHT

Statements that British manufacturers have recently been unable to fulfil orders in New Zealand, made at a meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association this week, are considered by the United Kingdom Manufacturers and New Zealand Representatives’ Association to be unjustified. The association has instructed its secretary to ask the Canterbury Association for details of the orders unfulAt a meeting of the United Kingdom Manufacturers’ Association, the secretary quoted from the Department of Overseas Trade December bulletin a list of orders totalling millions of pounds recently received from ageist every country in the world. This list, the association considers, gives sufficient indication of the ability of the United Kingdom firms not only to quote prices which compete with those of overseas manufacturers, but to deliver goods in accordance with the requirements of overseas purchasers. In a statement it has issued, the United Kingdom Association says it wishes to emphasise that British manufacturers are not- neglecting the Dominion markets. . “The Hon. W. Nash is now m England negotiating for the unrestricted entry of our primary produce, the statement says. ‘ Surely there is urgent need for a removal of duty on English goods before any reductions or concessions are given to foreign countries, and we feel that the New Zealand Government will not be stampeded into abolishing foreign duties without fully investigating the facts, and certainly not before we truly reciprocate with our one safe market, the United Kingdom.”

Order of Court Sets Out Schedules

STATEMENT BY MINISTER

FOR JUSTICE

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

GREYMOUTH, January 29.

An order of the Court of Review setting cut the schedules of the average prices for products ’ for the computation of the productive value of properties had been made, said the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Minister for Justice, at Greymouth, to-night. Under the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act, mortgages and leases were adjusted according to the productive value of farms.

A compilation of the order, continued the Minister, had involved an immense amount of work. Not only had the Government Statistician fur'nished many particulars, but much information had been procured from stock and station agents and other firms engaged in the handling of the, various types of farm produce. These particulars had required investigations going back for the last i.O years, and had involved a great deal of work cn the part of firms mentioned, indeed, far more than was imagined at the beginning of the investigation. The Minister expressed the gratitude of the Government to these firms for the generous way in which they had provided the Government with information which could not otherwise have been readily obtained. The order of the court which contained this information had now been transmitted to every- registrar of the Court of Review 7 , and copies could be obtained from registrars at 2s each. It was the Minister's hope that with this information available parties would endeavour to make their own voluntary adjustments. Not only was this the general policy of the act, but it was an express injunction in the act that commissions were to endeavour to secure voluntary settlements so far as possible. The information in the court order was most complete, and should enable the parties to discuss the position without further delay. When the ordinary reader saw an account of a wool sale, with its great, range of prices for different types of wool, they would realise that there was an immense amount of detailed work in preparing a schedule of average prices for that one commodity alone: but when they further learned what most persons not directly interested did not understand, that wool of nominally the same description, coming from different districts, would frequently average a different price because of the different time of shearing, probably involved a somewhat different percentage of grease in the wool, they would realise that the complexity was even greater than they had at first supposed. To the Government Printer the Minister said he was indebted tor the expedition with which he had the complicated mass of detail printed.
