MINISTER’S TOUR OF NELSON
♦ MR SULLIVAN RECEIVES DEPUTATIONS
development of important
INDUSTRIES
[From Our Own Reporter.!
NELSON, January 29.
The Minister for Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) was given a fine welcome to-day during his tour of the country districts in Nelson and Motueka, and on ‘all sides he heard expressions of appreciation of the interest he was showing in the working side of the several primary industries which come under his control. At Motueka he had a cheery civic reception from the Mayor (Mr R. J. L. York), and from Mr K. J. Holyoake, member of Parliament for the district. The Minister told the people there that the Government had in hand plans for the development of the important industries of the district, including tobacco, fruit, and hops. The Government had a big job to do in organising the fruit industry; but the foundations of the plan were available. The Government’s aim was to increase the prosperity and happiness of the people, and he believed that there was already a measure of success in this work. • At Motueka the Minister promised a deputation to investigate its request for a better shipping service to the port of Motueka, possibly by the provision of a daily link with Nelson; but he suggested that first it might be necessary to secure an assurance that any service provided would be given adequate support. . , . The Minister went from Motueka to Riwaka to inspect the tobacco industry and the orchards there, and returned in the evening to Nelson. There the Minister received a cordial reception at a special function held in the evening in the City Council Chamber by the Mayor (Mr G. L. Page) and members of the City Council and other district organisations. Particular reference was made by the speakers to the Minister’s long work as a former civic administrator in Christchurch. The Minister,' when replying, said how much he appreciated the friendly welcome he had received all over the district. To-morrow Mr Sullivan will leave Nelson by train for Westport, stopping at Glenhope to go by motor to Murchison, where he will hear a deputation about the completion of the railway line to that centre. He will spend the week-end at Westport.
