WELLINGTON, January 29.

The Dominion Observatory’s weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m., and dealing with the 24 hours following the time of issue, is as follows; —

Moderate to strong .northwesterly winds predominating at first, but changing to south-wcster-llcs by Saturday morning. Weather fair at first, but clouding over later, and becoming showery, temperatures becoming cooler. Seas, slight to moderate, but later rising. The following is the Dominion forecast; — Weather fair at first in eastern districts of the South Island, otherwise cloudy to overcast, and In places misty.. Fairly general rain probable, with many heavy falls over the North Island. Temperatures cooler to-morrow. A cyclone of tropical origin is now centred east of Auckland peninsula, and Is travelling south-eastwards. A westerly depression, followed by several secondaries, is moving on to the South Island, while an anticyclone rovers south-eastern Australia.

Winds—Moderate to strong southcastories north of Kawhia and Gisborne. reaching gale force In places; later turning more southerly. Elsewhere light to fresh north-west to west, shortly backing to southerlies and increasing. Seas 'New Zealand waters)— Rough north of East Cape and rather rough to rough about Cook Strait and Strait; elsewhere slight to moderate, but later increasing, especially about and north of Cook Strait. Eastern Tasman—Moderate to strong south-westerly or southerly winds, and rather rough to rough seas.

CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER

Yesterday in the city was one of the warmest days of the summer. There was a light north-west wind In the morning, giving way in the afternoon to a fresh north-east breeze. The maximum temperature was 77.5 degrees. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was clear, with a northerly breeze. The temperature was 61 degrees. The barometer, after falling steadily, registered 29.45 in. IN OTHER PLACES

Auckland—A strong southerly wind blew and there was heavy rain yesterday, with the barometer falling from 30.00 in at midnight to 29.50 m at 5 p.m. The wind lulled at 4 p.m., and the rain stopped. The wind changed to south-east a short time later, and began to freshen again. More heavy rain threatened last evening, and tin barometer was still falling. Temperatures were mild. Wellington—Yesterday the weather was overcast and threatening, with a fresh and gusty north-westerly wind and mild temperatures. The minimum temperature during Thursday night was 57.0 degrees; the maximum yesterday was 62.6 degrees, .and the temperature at 3.30 p.m. was 62.1 degrees. Dunedin —Yesterday, the . weather was pleasantly warm, with a fresh north-east breeze, and alternating periods of cloud and sunshine. The maximum temperature was 70 degrees. The barometer fell sharply to 29.44 in.
