Acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting will close at 5 p.m. on Friday. At the same lime a £1 forfeit is due for the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. Australian-bred Winner

The Takapuna Cup resulted in a win for the Australian-bred Knight of Australia. an eight-year-old gelding by Windbag from Belle Shot, by Pistol. He was purchased in Australia as a vearling by Mr F. Rose, but he now races in the ownership of Mr A. Toonian and is trained by A. Kemn, at Fllerslie. Knight of Australia had not won previously this season, and his sole success last season was in the H. O. Nolan Handicap, of £650, at Ellerslie at Easter, although he has been placed several times since. 'Jakanlni Juvenile

The result of the Calliope Handicap *t the Takapuna meeting yesterday did not unearth a new winning two-year-old, the winner, Bachelor King, haying won the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie in October last. He is a colt by Lapidary from a mare by Chesterfield and is trained by P. E. Pope at Takanini. Fresh Blood

Scarf Dance, who is expected to race well in the Sedgebrook Juvenile Handicap at Wanganui to-day, is a filly by Limond from Veil, so is a sister to the well-performed racehorse and sire Veilmond. She is owned by her breeder, Mr G. M. Currie. Other little-known youngsters engaged include Lickem, a colt by Lackham from Kilting, and Trim by Lackham from Zarene, both of whom are trained by O. Cox. Gaily is a filly by Siegfried from Just So; Ripple a filly by Captain Bunsby from Rillet, owned and trained by R. Barlow; and Airini is a filly by Gascony from Mori, the dam of Cockpen, who is now racing, with success in Singapore.

Engaged at New Plymouth The only Riccarton representative at the Taranaki meeting next week will he Convivial. She has raced solidly lately, and being a fair stayer she looks as if she should prove .equal to paying expenses on the New Plymouth and Hawera trip. Northern Visitor

It is reported from the south that H. Gray has made enquiries about accommodation for several horses for the Riverton meeting at Easter. This is one of the best programmes of the racing calendar, but with so many meetings throughout the country at the same time, few owners and trainers from far afield are attracted. Not at Her Best

Icing, who ran a good race Into third place in the Fitzherbert Handicap at Trentham, may not race again until Easter. She has been suffering from a dry cough for some time, so is- to be given every chance to overcome the trouble. Icing won the first two-year-old race of the present season. High Prices at Auction

With Beau Pere’s price of 3300 guineas still a topic of discussion, the appended list of prices paid for notable stallions sold by auction in New Zealand is of interest:— Gns. Nordenfeldt, by Musket —Onyx (bred in New Zealand) .. 5600 Kilbroney, by The Wag—lnnismakil (bred in Ireland) .. 4000 Multiform, by Hotchkiss—Formo (bred in New' Zealand) .. 3750 Archery, by Tracery—Port Sunlight (bred in England) .. 4500 Beau Pere. by Son-in-Law— Cinna (bred in England) .. 3300 Charlemagne 11., by St. SimonPerfect Dreams (bred in England) .. .. 2300 'Racing Official Holidaying Mr D. C. Braham, handicapper and stipendiary steward to the Western Australia Turf Club, recently left Perth for a holiday trip to New Zealand. Not Wanted

The former New Zealand performer, Stealth, who ran second to Roseburn in the King’s Cup, run at Perth in 1931. changed hands at auction recently for 10 guineas. Costly Rumours Newspaper men who go early in the morning to tracks derive no pleasure from hearing men who do not see horses working, telling them that so and so ran about a second or so faster than 'reported. One horse which started a hot favourite at Canterbury Park, Sydney, recently, was eported, according to rumours on that course, to have done a remarkable trial two days before the race. However, those few privileged to see the gallops were were not greatly impressed with the work of the horse concerned, and expressed surprise at the short price on offer. The horse was beaten! It is these rumour spreaders who do racing a lot of harm, and cost the betting public quite a lot of money. As a general rule, the man who circulates tales about grass-burning gallops is generally in bed when the horses are running against the clock.

TROTTING NOTES

Reminders Nominations for trotting events at the Gore and Winton meetings will close on Monday. Nominations for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s autumn meeting ■will close on Thursday next, while itiose for New Brighton will be taken up till a week later. Acceptances for the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close on Friday next. Engaged at Nelson Repeal, on 24 yards behind in the Nelson Trotting Club Handicap to-day, is a good, consistent pacer, owned and trained at Addington by J. Siebel. He will be called on to race against sev-

oral smart pacers, but he should hold his own in the class he is set to meet. Vinco’s Prospects Vinco, who claims several engagements at the Nelson Trotting Club's meeting, which will bo held 10-dav" and on Monday, is a four-voar-okl gelding by Man o’ War —Prolific, and is trained by L. A. Maidens. Vinco started twice as a two-year-old, but since then has been taken steadily, and has developed considerably. At the Westport meeting Vinco was twice placed second, and at Greymouth he won the Guinness Handicap of eight furlongs and a half in 2min 24 4-sscc. his stable-mate. Lynlev de Oro. being second. Vinco and Lynlcy de Oro should both pay their way at Nelson, where they will bo driven by L. Frost.

Breeding That Counts One of the greatest pacers of her inches ever raced in New Zealand was Jean McElwyn, by Nelson Bingen from the American-bred Miss Spears, a daughter of Peter the Great. Jean McElwyn was only a pony, and too small ever to be a champion, but she retired to the stud with a record for consistency that challenges comparison. She was one of the most genuine mares ever raced in the Dominion, and with her unequalled blood lines the pity is that she died after leaving only one foal. Yet the fame of Jean McElwyn will carry on for generations through her daughter. Grace McElwyn, who is now racing in the colours that her mother carried with such distinction. Grace, like Jean McElwyn, is only a pony, with many of the characteristics of her dam, and in fully extending Grand Mogul and defeating other good horses in the final event at Forbury Park on Thursday, she showed speed, gameness, and tenacity that can be respected only from a true-bred pacer. R. B. Berry, a noted horseman in both galloping and trotting, madd Jean McElwyn Into a fine racehorse, and now with one of her progeny with the same temperament and peculiarities, his task is made easier. Grace McElwyn is the counterpart of her dam. arid one of the most popular pacers in training. Champion Pacers Gamble and Indianapolis are possibly the two fastest pacers in commission to-day, and with pacemakers both could be relied on to break two minutes for a mile. Both are full of gameness, but while Indianapolis is a free goer, and requires no urging, Gamble does his best under a hard drive. While Indianapolis may not have reached his best, he does not exhibit the tricks that Gamble does, and apparently M. B. Edwards has yet to develop the latter into the real racehorse. Gamble is reaching the ago when he should have discarded his coltish tricks in a race, but apparently he is a late-comor. His trainer, Edwards, once told a representative of “The Press” that he could make Gamble a champion in six months, but he would probably break his heart in doing it. Gamble is not yet the finished article, but admirers of the great pacer can still repose their confidence in M. B. Edwards, who may yet produce the first horse in New Zealand to do better than two minutes for a mile. Tempest Tempest is known to be a very brilliant racehorse, but to show his best he must have a race run to suit him. He has been racing so well and so consistently for some time past that a win for him would be popular. While his stable-mate and brilliant pacer in Grand Mogul races best in front of a field, Tempest must be raced in behind, and allowed to unwind in the last furlong a burst of speed that in years past -would have left the rest standing. He is getting on in years, however, and he finds younger horses quite capable of producing two-minute speed for a short distance at the end of even the hardest-run race. There may be good races in Tempest, but his failure to get on the winning list has been costly to his connexions.

In Australia A recent winner at the Ascot meeting in Melbourne was the four-year-old Main Derby, by New Derby— Tearaway. First Voyage was also represented by a winner in Bell Age, who conceded 90 yards in two miles. W. McKay, who was associated with Walla Walla and Auburn Lad during their visit to New Zealand, drove a winner in Lee Derby, by Globe Derby— Lee White. This horse was nominated for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes three years ago. The Government’s Share

The taxation paid by the Westport Trotting Club to the Government on a turnover of £15,404 from its Christmas meeting is as follows: £ s. d. Totalisator duty .. -. Cl 6 3 2 Dividend duty .. .. 673 3 0 Stakes duty .. .. 18 0 0 Amusement tax .. .. 77 3 2 Total ~ .. 1334 9 4

i Inter-Dominion Championships The track at Wayville, on which the inter-Dominion championships are being run, is only two and a half furlongs in circumference, but it is surprising that at such an important meeting a championship event should have had to be rerun because of a mistake by the lap-keepers. Even with a round short Lawn Derby won the first distance—a mile —from Speedy Boy, who had raced prominently at the championships in Perth. Lawn Derby was only set to give away 10 yards, but in the original list of handicaps published, only Logan Derby, Royal’s Echo, Auburn Lad. Roi I’Or, and Indianapolis were asked to concede him a start. Lawn Derby is regarded as one of the greatest pacers ever raced in Australia, and while Indianapolis was looked to to provide the thrills at the inter-Dominion championships, a Melbourne writer in comparing the two horses had the following:—“ilndianapolis is the recognised fastest horse in Australia and New Zealand, his best against time being 2min 0 2-ssec, which is the Australian and New Zealand mile record. However, while Indianapolis has the time, it is a moot point whether he is any greater than Lawn Derby, who is just as good unhoppled as he is in hopples. Few will forget the performance he recorded at the last Easter show when he created a new record for a three-lap track by running the mile in 2min 3 l-ssec without boots or hopples. It seems certain that he will be taken to Perth after the championships to have a crack at the two minutes. His trainer, W. J. O’Shea, has a high opinion of the horse.” O’Shea is not unknown in the Dominion, for some years ago he brought to New Zealand a team of horses that included Machine Brick, winner of the Otahuhu Cup, Auto Machine, and Flying Machine, while ho also drove Mr J, R. McKenzie’s pacer Acron in several races in Auckland. In the one and a half miles and two miles championships Lawn Derby is still on 10 yards, and his. prospects of success are bright.

Jottings Tcorak has been very still alter his fall in the Southland Handicap, and there is a doubt whether he will be a starter at Forbury Park to-day. He was at the track yesterday morning for walking exercise only. Chancellor ran two bad races at Forbury Park on Thursday, and was not accepted for any race on to-day’s card. He broke a long way from home in the Electric Handicap, and w-hen close up with two furlongs to travel in the King George Handicap suddenly disappeared. His form must be very disappointing to his owner, Mr G. J. Barton, and he is about the only horse in the team that is not racing prominently at the present time. If Big Author again leaves the mark in the Royal Handicap this afternoon at Forbury Park as he did in the Electric Handicap on Thursday, he

WAIMATE K.C,

TOTAL STAKES INCREASED FOR APRIL MEETING

The Waimate Racing Club has decided to raise its stakes by £125 this year, in an effort to attract better horses to the April meeting. Mr G. A, McCulloch, who presided at the last meeting of the club, said that because of the healthy state of finances the stakes, which had been increased by £IOO last year, could be further raised this year. After a discussion, the meeting decided to leave the Studholme High-Weight Handicap at £BS, and the Trial Plate at £75, and to raise the principal race, the Waimate Cup, from £l5O to £2OO. The last five races were each raised to £IOO.

It was decided to apply to the Railway Department for the same arrangements for the train from Christchurch as last year. Mr J. E. Hcnrys, who has filled the position for the last 30 years, was appointed handicapper for the gallops.

It was resolved to adhere to the 7st 71b as the minimum weight for flat races.

should give the four-year-olds Double Great and Pot Luck a good test. They are giving him 12 yards, but if Double Great succeeds in the Telegraph Handicap earlier in the day his task will be made harder. Pot Luck, however, has speed, and should Double Great not be on his original mark he will make Big Author stretch out fully.

NOTES ON THE RACING

[THE PRESS Special Service.]

AUCKLAND, January 29.

Heavy rain marred the opening of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting at Ellerslie to-day, and the going was very heavy. Surprise wins were recorded by Mata Had, who paid more than a quarter of a century, Jan Ridd, and Knight of Australia.

Favourite Wins Easily

The top-weight, Tudor, was installed an cach-way favourite for the Orewa Hurdles, and he justified the support by winning easily. Jumping with his usual dash, Tudor gained ground at most of the hurdles, and was never in danger of defeat. He has won at his last two starts, and.he simply outclassed his opponents on this occasion, though he had list 91b and the ground was very heavy. High Quality did best of the others; but he was unsuited to the conditions, and in the circumstances his performance was very creditable. Gay Cavalier just plodded round to get third, and Merry Lap. who did not jump well, ran far below his best. Jim Kidd Surprises

The moderately-fancied Jan Ridd brought off a surprise in winning the Trial Stakes Handicap, paying double figures on the straight-out machine. The winner was having his first race for some months, and has been operated unon for respiratory trouble since he last appeared in public. The treatment has proved a great success, and he won handsomely after waiting behind the pacemakers, Orefield and Huntsman’s Chorus, until reaching the straight. Orefield tired quickly near the end; but Huntsman's Chorus fought on solidly for second. Black Musk ran on very strongly to get third, and though he was a couple of lengths behind the second horse he confirmed the good impression he created at Thames. The favourites, Ngakaru and Tidewater, did not appear to relish the going, and were never prominent. Ngakaru was galloped on slightly, and lost ground after being checked near the turn. Droll shaped very creditably, and Pirate King was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Square Acre’s Victory

Relishing the heavy going. Square Acre scored handsomely in the Kerry Handicap, for which Fox Moth was a good each-way favourite. Square Acre displayed a fine burst of speed to reach the lead in the middle stages, and stayed on soundly at the end. always having the measure of the opposition in the run up the straight. Square Acre is in fine form at present, and may win again soon. Waitaka ran easily his best race for some time, and went on solidly at the end to get second, although he was unable to trouble Square Acre seriously. Fox Moth went fast early to get a position, and failed to finish as well as expected, although she battled on gamely. Gay Egypt was closer in fourth position than at any other stage, and Fleetwind and High Star did the best of the others. High Star displayed fine dash early, but the effort left him wanting at the finish.

Well-deserved! Victory After running a number of good races since he won the H. O. Nolan Handicap at Ellerslie last autumn, Knight of Australia scored a well-deserved victory in the Takapuna Cup. The winner went better over the heavy ground than most of the others, and was never further back than second. Kelly ran his best race since the spring, although he was inclined to shirk his work when on the inside along the back. However, when his rider pot him to the outside over the last half-mile he galloped generously, to run a good second. Gay Broney. who is not suited by heavy going, showed that he is in form by fighting on solidly to get third. Lagoon faded into fourth near the end, after making most of the pace, and after being in front with Knight of Australia entering the straight. Mazir flattered the hopes of his supporters when he moved up smartly on the inside entering the straight; but he was unable to maintain his effort in the heavy going and faded away at the finish. Con Fuoco made a fair showing, but Dark Shadow tired in the ground, and was well beaten. Gay Talkie failed to show any dash, and was never prominent.

Bachelor King’s Consistency

The consistent Bachelor King showed himself to be of better class than the others in the Calliope Handicap, by carrying the steadier of 9-6 and winning handsomely. Bachelor King lumped out in front, and the only time he was headed was when Feldberg held a slight advantage as they raced round the home turn. Once the straight was reached Bachelor King asserted his superiority, and wen by a clear.margin. Nuclei finished very fast on the outside to get second, and she may do better at her next attempt. Airam made a very creditable showing for third, as she drew the outside at the barrier and covered a good deal of ground, being very wide out when she moved up smartly at the home turn. Land Girl shaped very creditably in her first race, and Feldberg did best of th« others. Kilonsas Success On the strength of her good form at flic summer meeting at Ellerslie, the improving Kilonsa was made an eachway favourite for the Wynyard Plate, and she realised expectations by winning nicely. She was quietly ridden by A. Tinker, and after being in front for about two furlongs she was steadied in behind, to come into the straight behind Jack Tar, Mainland, and Rollicker. Over the last furlong she displayed marked superiority, and soon settled the leaders when the pressure was applied. Mainland ran her usual honest race, and after being well placed throughout she fought on solidly for second. Rollicker ran a good race for third, and he might have been a little closer but that he had to go on the outside at the turn. .Jack Tar displayed his usual early dash, and after making most of the pace he tired in the straight. Rulette and Sergia were beaten in the going. Gappy moved up smartly in the middle stages, but was unable to maintain his effort. Another Surprise

The Hawke’s Bay candidate, Mata Hari. provided a surprise in winning the Zealandia Handicap, paying more than a quarter of a century on the straight-out machine. Though she was not as smart to move as some of the others, Mata Hari was quickly in the load, and she ran on resolutely in the straight to withstand a determined challenge from Tybalt, who came from a good way back with a fine run on the inside. Mungacre was always one of the leaders, and finished gamely to got third: and Whirling weakened into fourth after being right up at the distance. Triune shaped creditably, and Armacourt, who went out very wide at the turn, did the best of the others. Survey’s Win

After running a number of creditable races, Survey opened his winning account by scoring in the Rangitoto Handicap, for which Respectful was the favourite. Survey, who had run unplaced earlier in the day in the Trial Stakes Handicap, made an improved showing in the smaller field, and went on strongly at the finish, after running up to the leaders, Respectful, Aymon, and Vera Acre, at the home turn. It was Survey’s best effort to date, and now that he has broken the ice he may soon win again. Vera Acre’s was a solid effort, and Trouvaille battled on to get third after being near the rear early. Aymon weakened near the end to be fourth, and Respectful ran into fifth place after being the leader in the middle stages and into the straight.
