GOOD PLAY IN SECOND DAY’S MATCHES

The second day’s play in the West Coast tennis tournament was continued in perfect weather. Some excellent games were played. The following are the results; — Championships MEN’S DOUBLES

MINISTERIAL VISIT

HON. H. G. R. MASON ON WEST COAST

The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Minister for Justice, arrived at Greymouth yesterday afternoon from Murichson. via Westport and Reefton. He left Blenheim on Thursday and spent the night at Murchison. Last evening he inspected the Greymouth courthouse and gaol. To-day ho will leave for Weheka, calling at Hokiu..a to inspect the courthouse and gaol, and at Matainu. to see the courthouse. He will spend the week-end at the glaciers and will return to Greymouth on Monday From here he will go to Christchurch and then to Wellington. He is accompanied by Mrs Mason and Mr B. L. Dallard, Under-Secretary of Justice, and Mr G. F. Dixon, private secretary.

ANNUAL MEETING AT BLACKBALL

The annual general meeting of the Blackball Miners’ Hall and Welfare Society (Inc.), was held in the Miners’ Hall, Blackball, with Mr H. G. Cruse presiding. The balance-sheets were adopted.

The secretary explained having completed the agreement with the Grey Hospital Board covering their membership for the current three months. His action was endorsed. The request of the Blackball baths committee for a grant was held over until the reply of the Minister for Education to the baths deputation’s representations on his recent visit to the town. , The election of officials resulted as follows: —President, Mr H. _G. _ Cruse; vice-president, Mr H. S. Ritchie; secretary; Mr R. Clark; treasurer, Mr A. MacGougan; committee, Messrs R. Duncan, J. Mac Neil, G. Anderson, jun.. H. Bowkett, *A. MacDougall, E Jones and A. J. Meadowcroft; auditors, Messrs D. Cochrane and W. Oliver; trustees, Messrs Cruse, MacGougan, and Clark. It was decided to call tenders for the painting of the inside of the hall and rooms. A discussion took place regarding the unsatisfactory results obtained from the present heating installation when it was agreed that this matter be gone into by the secretary and some heating experts. It was decided that a deputation representing 'the union should wait upon the Ministers for Railways and Mines during their coming visit to the district and place matters of importance to the town before the Ministers.

PROFIT FROM SPORTS

MEETING

The balance-sheet of the Labour Day Sports Committee, showing a credit balance of £lOl, was adopted at a meeting of the committee held in the Labour party’s rooms. The Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny) presided.

ROSS SPORTS CLUB

YEAR’S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED

The annual meeting of the Ross Sports Club was held on Wednesday evening, when there was an attendance of 20 members.

The balance-sheet disclosed a profit of £l4 from last year’s meeting. This was considered very satisfactory, as the two previous meetings had been run at a loss. *

The election of officers resulted in all last year’s officers being re-elected. It was decided to hold the 1937 meeting on Easter Tuesday, as usual, and to increase the prize money to £BO. Personal Mr P. D. O’Connell, postmaster, Ross, has received advice of his promotion to the position of supervisor, Hokitika.

WESTPORT PERSONAL NOTES

Messrs L. A. Hulston, R, Wright, and Miss Joyce Hulston (Christchurch), who have been touring the northern end of the South Island, left for Christchurch, via Greymouth, yesterday, after spending a short time as the guests of Mr and Mrs R. Thomson, Ngakawau. Mr and Mrs R. Brown (Taradale, Hawke’s Bay), who have been spending a holiday at Westport, left for the North Island yesterday. Mrs J. Molloy (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs H. Holder. Mrs A. Wilkie has returned to Westport after a holiday in Canterbury. Mr and Mrs J. Huddleston and daughter have returned from a holi-

day visit to Wellington and Auckland.

Mrs T. Mallett has returned from the North Island, where the death of her father, Mr Harvey, occurred recently. Mr G. Spencer (Roxburgh) is staying with his brother, Mr L. Spencer.

ADDITIONS TO VICTORIA COLLEGE BUILDINGS

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TEI.EGBAM.) WELLINGTON, January 29. The council of Victoria University College will have plans prepared for building additions which were approved last year by the Cabinet.

The extensions, which will cost £50,000, will comprise a biological block of two storeys and a separate administration block to make way for an enlarged library.
