FORWARD!

(This space is reseed each Saturday for an aU* Sory or article on points «< public interest, and on Ai principles and opinions Tf Hay’s Limited.) V -

(By CONSILIARIUS.) We live in an age of progress, and for success each yeatW be a year of progress. The wort* is steadily, implacably, proErrwT Science and machinerv cold, heartless, ruthless, m emotional, material it progress They dictate, ij! feelingly. Everywhere is soeS —progress. Man must proves and keep pace. There can beiS standing still. To stand still k to degenerate.

There are those who decry thk era—and the passing of another They decry the passing ideals, conservatism and indhrid ual effort. They say there fe no time, now, for great dreams, aspirations and ideals. No thne* That the dreamer is a sloth. That the idealist is a fom who is bound to be disillusioned Because of the ceaseless rash of progress which is omnipotent! But no. From dreams have come progress, and progress has given to the world, idealists material ideals. It has built from the dreamers’ wonderful, seemingly impossible dreams, and created from ideals. Progress calls for dreams and ideals amf goes hand-in-hand with them. There are those who point to ancient cultures, to the and literature of old masters, to the sculpture of Athens, and to the organisation and administration of Roman times—and then ask if this age has bettered But progress cannot be measured only thus. That which hfew mankind generally and betters his position in the world is progress. The prevention and cure of diseases and sickness, that which adds to the comfort and the welfare of the the conquest of land, sea and air—for the convenience and good of mankind—are true progress. We can measure it comparatively but there is no superlative—it must continue until it becomes perfection, the complete ideal. This Business was founded on an ideal and it has been built by progress. On that combination it has thrived. Retail trading—the distribution of the world’s produce and goods to toe people—is a fine test of world progress. Undeveloped trade robs millions of their right to share in their selection of toe products of this progressive age. It is the duty of any honest retail house to place before toe' public, conveniently, and as cheaply as possible, the «r«t products of the world. We realise that, and we have made that bur aim. We know that thus we have progressed during 1936; now we welcome gladly the change cf more progress afforded us by the advent of another year. HAY’S LIMITED.
