FINDING LABOUR FOR FARMS

WORKERS’ FEDERATION • OFFERS HELP ENQUIRY ABOUT CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, January 21. A desire to assist the farming community in easing the problem of the shortage of 'farm # workers is expressed by the New Zealand Federation of Local Bodies’ Employees, Builders, Contractors, and General Workers in a letter to Mr A. P. O’Shea,, secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. “We have noted with interest your comments about the shortage of labour for the various farm duties,” the .federation states. “We may be able to assist you and farmers if you will forward the following information:—The classes of men required; the total number required; localities in which labour is needed, together with the esti- , mated number of workers sought for each locality; the period for which labour is wanted; rates of wages and other remuneration and general conditions of service.” The federation asks further if Mr O’Shea could indicate whether it would be possible to provide conveyance to the place of work or alternatively to advance to the men willing to take farm work the money required for fares. ’ The federation’s letter, which is signed by the secretary (Mr P. M. Butler) requests that the matter be treated as urgent and adds that its branches throughout the country would be communicated with and every effort would be made to supply farmers’ needs.
