NEWSPAPERS TO AMALGAMATE

HAWKE'S EAY "HERALD" AND "TRIBUNE"

MORNING JOURNAL TO CEASE PUBLICATION (PaZSA ASSOCIATION TELEGRAIf.) HASTINGS, January 15. To-morrow the Hawke's Bay "Herald" will make its final appearance as a morning paper. In the afternoon there will be published the "Hawke's Bay Herald-Tribune." a newspaper that will consolidate the interest and circulation of the two papers that have been produced from the same office since 1931. when the plant and building of the "Herald" were uestroyed by the earthquake. At that t.me, the proprietors of the "Herald" accepted the offer of the "Tribune" directors to. produce the morning paper. Subsequently, the interests of the "Herald" proprietors were acquired by. the "Tribune." and its production was continued under one management. Circumstances now make it desirable that the two papers should be produced as one unit. An increasing payroll and other costs have made the production of newspapers more expensive, and this applies particularly to morning newspapers. Inroroved transport has made it possible to cover the whole territory with an afternoon newspaper. First published in Naoier on September 24, 1857. the "Herald" has entered uoon the eightieth year of service to the province. Its aim. as propounded by its founder, was to "advance the true interests of the district," and in its new form it will continue with added strength to serve the same ideal in treading the path of progress with other Hawke's Bay institutions that have srown with it. The "Herald" is the second oldest newspaper in New Zealand, the oldest being the "Taranaki News." The "Otago Daily Times" justly claims to be the oldest daily newsoaper. but the Hawke's Bay "Herald." which was first published as a weekly, is entitled to seniority in actual years. The "Tribune" was first published in 1912. when it incorporated the "Hastings Standard," established in 1896. The editorial policy of the two papers is unchanged.
