CONCRETE CROSSING IN COE'S FORD

SPRINGS COUNCIL UNABLE TO FACE COST THIS YEAR

The members present at the monthly meeting of the Springs County Council were Crs. J. S. Simpson (chairman), P. V. Bailey, J. W. Kime, and C. H. Watson. Sympathy was extended to Cr. J. H. Williams in his illness.

The council expressed keen regret at the death of Mr F. Rowell, representative of the district on the North Canterbury Hospital Board for a number of years, and the clerk was asked to convey a message of sympathy to Mrs Rowell. It was decided to support the nomination of Cr. John Heslop, chairman of the Ellesmere County Council, for the vacancy on the Hospital Board caused by Mr Rowell's death. The Ellesmere Council wrote about a proposal to lay a concrete crossing in Coe's ford, the cost of a 90-foot length, with a usable width of nine feet being estimated at £2OO. While sympathetic to the proposal, the council decided to reply that it could not face its half share of the cost this year because of its other commitments. To minimise the risk of accidents the foreman was given authority to paint the wings of bridges where he considered it desirable.

After considering a letter from Mrs J. Rolston, Lincoln, it was decided to ask two adjoining property owners to clean part of the Lincoln stream. Authority was given the overseer to have the Selwyn Huts road past Cook's property improved. The dog registration fees were fixed at the usual rates, and Mr E. W. Bennett was reappointed collector.
