AN EXTINCT RACE OF TASMANIANS
THEORY OP ORIGIN ADVANCED (PHES3 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, January 14. The mysterious origin of extinct Tasmanians, who were of a negroid type with frizzy hair, was discussed by Mr W. E. L. H. Crowther, of Hobart, in a paper to the anthropology section.of the Science Congress. He expressed the belief that the natives had reached the island by slow infiltration by canoe from Melanesian and other Pacific islands, going southward along the Australian coast and finally by sea across Bass Strait, possibly breaking this part of their journey at some of the strait islands.
