CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD ON UNITED GREENS RESULTS OF GAMES o The seventh annual South Island croquet championships were begun yesterday on the United Club's greens in Hagley Park. There was a good attendance of well-known competitors from places as far distant as Auckland and Invercargill. The players were welcomed by Mr A. G. F. Ross, president of the Canterbury Association, and Mr R. McCreath, vicepresident of the New Zealand council, declared the tournament open. In the morning the greens were fairly heavy, but the bright sunshine made conditions ideal in the afternoon. Tills year the tournament is being conducted differently, in that no handicap matches will be played. One of the most important matches was that between Mrs W. Corbet (South Island woman champion) and H. Stratton (New Zealand champion, Hastings) in the open championship. Stratton won the first game. In the second game, after varying play, Mrs Corbet won, and she also won the third game, which was evenly contested. ■ '■ Most of the players were apparently only settling down, and there was no outstandingly good demonstration in any of the matches. The North Island croquet' tournament was continued to-day in fine weather. There was a large attendance of spectators. In,the open championship, Mrs W. E. Caldow (Wellington) beat F. L. Hartnell (New Plymouth), 26-22, 25-26, 26-23; Miss E. Washer (Patea) beat Mrs E. Bartlett (Auckland). 26-15, 9-26, 26-12; and W. E. Caldow (Wellington) beat N. Jarvie (Wanganui), 26-8, 26-10. In the final of the handicap doubles. Mr and Mrs G. F. Bennett (Hastings) beat Mrs W. E. Caldow and Mrs M. Beveridge (Wellington), 26-19. KAIAPOI BEATS LINWOOD A pennant match played at Kaiapoi between Kalapoi and Linwood Clubs was won by Kaiapoi.
