ACCIDENTS
SHIP'S COOK INJURED STRUCK BY SIDE OP BEEP (FHESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) WELLINGTON, January 14. The Government steamer Matai put back to Wellington this afternoon to land the ship's cook, who had been injured when a side of beef fell on him. The Matai left Wellington at 11 a.m. yesterday and steamed to Palliser Bay, where she intended to land stores for the lighthouse; but the swell was so heavy that she anchored for the night in the bay. The ship was rolling heavily, and the cook, J. D. Murdoch, was struck by a side of beef which, dislodged from its hook, hit him in small of the back. Murdoch's condition became worse,, and the ship put back to Wellington so that he might be given medical attention. The Matai will leave port at 11 p.m. <o-day for the Palliser Bay lighthouse, STRUCK BY MOTOR-CAR Head abrasions, a fractured left ankle, and concussion were the injuries received by Ernest W. Lange, a iarmex, d£ 2SS Kills scad. Maieeb.au., when he was struck by a car while he was walking along Kelly's road, near Hills road, about £> o'clock last evening. Lange was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital by the St. John Ambulance, and was admitted about 9.30 p.m. His condition later in the evening was considered satisfactory.
