The Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) travelled to Stewart Island yesterday and spent the day hearing several deputations. Yesterday morning he was given a civic reception at Bluff, and last evening he was entertained at dinner by the Bluff Borough Council. Later he was the guest at a social arranged by the Bluff branch of the Labour party To-day the Minister will hear deputations at Bluff, and he will spend the day m the Awarua electorate. Friday and Saturday will be occupied by a tour of the Wallace electorate in company with the leader of the Opposition (the Hon. A. Hamilton). The Minister will visit Te Anau for the week-end.—Press Association. .Mr A. G. Dawson, chief organiser for the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, is visiting Christchurch, and yesterday he attended a meeting of the North Canterbury executive, accompanied by Mr i. H. Barker, recently appointed organiser for the Canterbury ' and Westland areas. Lieutenant-Colonel G. , H. J. SkefßngtonSmyth, D. 5.0., a brother-in-law of the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Galway, accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel E. F. Morrison-Bell, 0.8. E., is visiting Christchurch.' They are staying at the United Service Hotel. The Rev. G. W. Gibb, director of the China Inland Mission, is visiting Christchurch. Major J. P. Oakes returned to Christchurch yesterday morning by the steamer express after a visit to Nelson and Auckland. At a meeting of the committee of the New Brighton Surf-Bathing and Life-Saving Club, a motion of sympathy was passed with the. relatives of Dr. W. E. Stevens, members standing in silence. The club captain (Mr A. T. F. Stokes) spoke of the services Dr. Stevens had given to the club during his many years of service as its honorary surgeon, and said that he had been a member since its inception. Sympathy with the relatives of Dr. Stevens was also expressed at a meeting of the Aranui Burgesses’ Association last evening.
