At 20 years of age my first Maori teacher was Hori Harata (Geo. Hansard, married to a Maori lady of high lineage), an interpreter to the then government. I have continued throughout the years to perfect the Maori tone and production, which is one of the most important parts of the work. Old tohungas, skilled men, have paid me the compliment of saying that "I am a- Maori, different only in the skjn." I ask "Pakeha" to verify my statements, and accept them in the interests of the Maori. I know my friend "T.A.S." (whose letters are always a source of joy to me) will in his turn identify me and agree. Hemi Kawana (James Cowan), a life-long friend, is in constant communication with me, both of us reading and writing Maori.
