WEDDINGS

ORBELDj-RITCHIE The wedding took place on Thursday at All Saints’ Church, Dunedin, of William Derrick, only son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Orbell, the Levels, Timaru, and Mary Catharine, younger daughter of Dr. and Mrs Russell Ritchie, Dunedin. The ceremony was . performed by Archdeacon L. G. Whitehead and Mr Lilly was organist. The bride entered the church with her father, and wore a mediaeval gown of old ribbed silk given her by her great-aunt. Miss McLaren, of Timaru. The diagonally-tucked bodice had leg-o’-mutton sleeves and a square neckline, and the skirt was fully trained. Her veil of Honiton lace, lent by Mrs Orbell, fell from a halo of pleated tulle. She carried deep cream roses. Her bridesmaids—Misses Joan Ritchie (her sister), Annette Orbell (the bridegroom’s sister), Elizabeth Ritchie (the bride’s cousin), Janet Orbell, Molly Birch, and Mary Reeves—wore frocks of parchment chiffon with bodices diagonally pin-tucked and cut with ■ square necklines and short flounced sleeves. Their skirts flared from the knees into slight trains. Sashes of cherry chiffon and coronets of cherry rosebuds made a pretty colour contrast completed by the bouquets of red roses which they carried. ■ Mr James Ritchie, the bride’s brother, was best man, and Messrs Richard Reeves, Anthony Ritchie, M. Sidey, W., S. Armitage, and Robin Harper were groomsmen. Ushers were Messrs R. Lawson and F. Leckie. The reception was held at Craighall, Mornington, the home of the bride’s aunts, the Misses Rattray. Guests were received by Mrs Ritchie The bride travelled in a frock of heavy crepe in a honey-fawn tone with tucked bodice. The collar was trimmed’ with ■" triangles of brown patent leather. Her brown loose coat was flnger-tip length, and she wore a brown shiny straw toque with an eye-veil and an uncommon ornament on the crown. FRICKLETON—LYON The marriage was , celebrated recently at St. Paul’s Church, Cashel street, of Agnes Davidson (Nan), only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Lyon, of Christchurch, arid William Lewis, only son of Mrs E. and the late Mr H. Frickleton, .of Christchurch, -The service was conducted by the - Rev, A. C. Watson and Mr Arthur Lilly was organist. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a trained gown of pearltinted satin cut on . classical lines. Tucks formed the sleeves and yoke and finished the. neck with tiny mitres. Pleated tulle and a wreath of orange blossom finished her bridal veil of tulle, and she carried a sheaf of Christmas lilies. . Her bridesmaids. Misses M. Nunn and V. White, wore Victorian frocks of delphinium blue muslin spotted in white, and picture hats of lace straw in the same shade. They carried shower bouquets of pink carnations and sweet peas. The little flower girl, Maureen Conner, was dressed similarly to the bridesmaids. The bridegroom was attended by Mr H. Hiles as best man and Mr A. Whitworth as groomsman. The ushers were Messrs D. Alexander and L. Watson. - A was- held, at the-; Winter Garden, where the bride’s mother and the bridegroom’s mother received the guests. ‘ Mrs Lyon wore' a brown floral frock with coat and hat to tone, and Mrs Frickleton a navy ensemble. The bride travelled in a nigger brown tailored suit with accessories to tone. ! KIRTON—WOOLCOCK The marfiage was celebrated at ; St. Saviour’s Church, Sydenham, of; Alfred Robert, youngest ’ Son of Mr arid -Mrs J. Kirton, and Winifred Edith, yotiftger daughter of Mr "and Mrs J. Wdolcbck. The ceremony was performed by the Rey. C. L. Mountfort, . The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a gown of white satin beaute, with. a spray of orange blossom at the neckline. Her veil was held in place by a halo of orange blossom, and the shower bouquet was of White lilies and. carnations, . ; 1 She was attended by her sister, Mrs R. W. Taylor, as matron of honour. She Wore a ■floral silk organdi frock cut on similar lines to that of the bride. Her hat was of blue chip straw, and she carried a shower bouquet to tone. The flower-girl. Miss Betty Woolcock, niece of the bride, wore hj shell pink, frock shirred at the waist and ; finished at the neckline .with flat flowers. REID—RHODES A wedding of interest to Akaroa residents was solemnised at St. Peter’s Church/ Akaroa, on Wednesday morning, when’ Una,' younger daughter of Mr and Mrs H. A. Rhodes, Walnut avenue, was married to Eric. ) John Reid’ ‘ grandson’ of the late Mr. and Mrs H. Weeks, of “Corsham,” Akaroa, The Rey/ H. Nelson Wright, vicar of Akaroa, officiated at the ceremoriy, and Mrs I. Pilkington was organist. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a navy blue pin striped costume, and a smocked blouse of dusky pink. Her wide-brimmed hat was of navy blue, straw, relieved with an ornamental buckle, and she carried a pretty Victorian posy of pink and blue flowers and' maidenhair fern. Miss Joyce Rhodes, cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid, and wore a frock of floral silk crepe, patterned in shades of orange, lemon, and fawn. The frock was shirred across the front and tied at the neck with a gold cord, and the sleeves were long and full and orange 'flowers trimmed the brown straw hat, and her bouquet of tangerine and orange flowers toned with her frock. Mr Kenneth Rhodes, brother of the bride, attended as best man. After the'ceremony a reception was held at the Kowhai tea rooms, Akaroa, where Mrs Rhodes, the bride’s mother, received the guests, who- included relatives and a few intimate friends. Mrs Rhodes wore an ensemble df beige and brown. The beige wool marocain coat was braided on the collar and cuffs with brown, and was worn, over a brown patterned frock, and her brown straw hat Was trimmed with a plaited bandeau of brown and beige. She carried a posy df pink flowers with touches of mauve. Mr and Mrs E. J. Reid, who will live at Akaroa, left later for Christchurch by motor. •

PARTY AT PREBBLETON To, further the candidature of their daughter, Miss Margaret Carpenter, in the swimming club’s queen carnival, Mr and Mrs W. Carpenter gave an evening party at their home at Prebbleton, Competitions Were won by Mrs G. Simpson, Mrs T. Smith, Mr W. DANCE AT DARFIELD A very enjoyable and successful dance Was held in the Darfield Memorial Hall In aid of the Catholic Church funds, Arrangements were In the hands of an energetic committee, with Mr J. M, Duncan as honorary secretary, and Mrs L. Fox In charge of the supper. The ballroom was decorated with coloured streamers and. bowls of flowers, and the supper tables were decorated by Mrs L. Morrison with vases of multi-coloured flowers. Novelty dances were won by Miss Esme Cooper, add Mr C. Reed, and by Miss Alma' Whyte arid Mr J. Henderson. ‘ The Rialto Dance Band supplied the music, and extras Were played by Misses/Margaret Clinton, Shelia Fo3t, a l nd Muriel Charles. The 'guest of honour was the Rev. Father J. McMonagle.
