PERSONAL ,Mr L. L. Derbidge, sub-manager for the Union Steam Ship Company, at Lyttelton, is at present acting-mana-ger at the company’s Christchurch office, relieving Mr A. R. Thompson for holidays. Seamen’s Institute Many members of the crews of ships which were in port on Thursday were entertained at a whist drive, organised by Mrs F. Mintey, and held in the Seamen’s Institute in the evening. Mrs Mintey distributed prizes to the winners, and ,supper was served. New Cranes in Use Yesterday, two of the 10 new electric cranes now being assembled for the Harbour Board were in use for the first time, being employed at the Port Townsville, which was also using two of the earlier type of cranes and her own gear. The new cranes were built in Britain by the Clyde Crane and Engineering Company, and are described as five-ton electric cargo and grabbing portal cranes. Features of the new cranes are a longer jib, giving them a greater radius of action, and faster working. The material for the last three of the 10 cranes ordered will arrive at Lyttelton in about 10 dhys. , In all, 21 electric cranes were in use on the waterfront yesterday, six of them being on Number 3 wharf.
