HAY CROPS
SUBSTANTIAL LOSSES There has been a great loss of hay crops this season. Scores of acres of mown clover, grass, and lucerne are lying ungathered, with the following growth, in the case of clover and lucerne, practically obscuring them. In some cases the destroyed cocks of hay have been gathered up and set alight, so as not to interfere with the following growth. Hay has been practically unsaleable this last two months on account of the great growth of grass, but there is just a probability that the damage that has been caused will create a shortage later on in, the season. Turnips in most districts appear to have germinated well, but reports of the fly doing damage have come to hand, and farmers who are dependent on hay and turnips for the winter'would be wise to bear in mind the possibilities of a scarcity. ,
