on the present West Coast circuit, and gave a very weak display at Reefton yesterday. Lochain made his first appearance at Reefton yesterday since the New Zealand Cup meeting, but after showing fair pace for half the journey, he cried enough. His Own Fault . Monipere should not have been beaten in the principal event at Reefton yesterday. He conceded Free Rose a lot of ground entering, the straight, but would then have beaten her home only for moving into the fence when his rider drew the whip. This happened twice, and although he made a great sprint in the last few strides, he had to submit to a neck defeat. With the experience gained by his rider, Monipere should make amends to-day. A High-class Marc Arrowrose is entitled to nank as one of the most cohsistent West Coast performers in recent years. She has been produced five times on the present circuit, and has had four wins and one third placing. She is in remarkably good order just now, and is likely to shape creditably in meetings away from home during the autumn. Not Up to Standard Derive’s success at Hororata encouraged her owner to take her to the West Coast meetings, and her prospects looked favourable, but she has raced very disappointingly, and it appears that she will find it difficult in the future to repeat her Hororata success. At a Disadvantage Cyclonic made a game attempt to get up to Metal Bird in the concluding event at Reefton yesterday, but was always on the outside berth, and covered more ground than the winner. In any case, Metal Bird was infinitely the better horse on the day, as Cyclonic was suffering from the effects of a pricked foot, and was not at. his best. TROTTING NOTES Reminders Nominations for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting will close on Tuesday at 9 p.m. Excused Grand Mogul, the greatest disappointment at Auckland over the Christmas racing period, was suffering from kidney trouble, according to his owner, Mr G. J. Barton. The going was against him the second day, and he did not start the last day. Mr J. E. McKenzie Going to Adelaide Mr H. F. Nicholl, who has recently returned from a trip abroard, is unable to attend the conference to be held in Adelaide during the trotting carnival, and has asked Mr J. R. McKenzie to represent the New Zealand Trotting Conference. at Adelaide. Mr McKenzie will leave by the Aorangi from Auckland on January 18. Promising Trotter The three-year-old trotter Gerfalcon has not had a great deal of racing but in his few outings he has impressed as a juvenile who will do well later ■when, he has acquired more experience and age. By Wrack from Nantwich, he comes from a useful family,' and has the breeding to recommend him as a trotter. Spessiva Changes Stables J. Bryce did not return south after the recent Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, but went to Te Awamutu to take charge of Spessiva for to-day’s meeting at Cambridge. Spessiva was given .her early education by Bryce before she was sent to F. J. Smith’s stable at Tafcanini and she has developed into a decidedly useful mare. It is possible that now she has left Smith’s care she will be returned to Hornby for her future racing. President’s Handicap Prospect The manner in which Gallant Knight has Won over all distances up to a mile and a half suggests that he will find little difficulty in going a solid two miles and he will be given an opportunity over this journey in the President’s Handicap at Timaru, when he will be set to give the limit horses 24 yards Gallant Kinght is one of the most improved, pacers in sight at the moment and he has made a rapid rise ’to the intermediate classes with the promise of going on to better company. Well Belated Dollar Maid, who scored her. first success at the Greymouth meeting on Wednesday, is .a five-year-old trotter by the old champion pacer Great Bingen from the American-imported mare Miss, by Axworthy (son of Guy Axworthy) from Miss Alma Mater, by Peter the Great. Dollar Maid was bred by Mr J. R. McKenzie, who sold her to Mr W. H. Roche, of Westport, when she was a two-year-old. Dollar Maid was inclined to “stage fright’’ last season, and although she has Improved in this respect, she will need more experience to overcome her lack of confidence. Coming Bight Mystery Yet has always been capable of showing rare speed and stamina in his track work, but a tendency to dwell at the barrier made'him an unreliable racing proposition when he was trained at Addington by E. C. McDermott. Now under R. J. Humphreys, he has enjoyed a good spell from racing and his two wins at the Greymouth meeting suggested that he has mended his ways. If that is the case he will be seen to advantage in much better company than that which he beat in the principal races on Wednesday and Thursday. Successful Day The Hastings trotting trainer, J. A. Gerrard, had a fine' run of success on the first day of the Wairarapa Trotting Club’s meeting, when he won with Marina, Roadster, Native Tree and Abyssinian King, who also won again the second day. Gerrard also gained seconds with Marina, Roadster and Native Tree, and his record of five firsts and three seconds was good. Gerrard was at one time relnsman for Mr J. H. Moyd, and won many races with The Shrew, Raima, Luminate, Capilano and Manco. Native King Trotters •' Debutante, who, was'the outstanding trotter at the Westport meeting, registering three firsts and a third in four starts, is by Native King—Whao, and was bred by Mr J. M. Robertson, of Westport, ownejr of Sweet Agnes, Master Reynard and other racehorses: Debutante won. some races for her breeder, who recently sold her to L. F. Berkett. Native Tree and Native Bird, who were successful at Wairarapa, are also by Native King, who added still further to his record as a sire of straight-out trotters when Meadow King won at Epsom. Still Popular Ginger Jack disappointed on the first day of the Greymouth meeting, when he failed to handle Ihe going at all well, ! but he did not lose any. friends when he went under to Mystery Yet in the principal event on Thursday, On -this occasion he did everything correctly to run through and take the lead with almost a mile to go. However, his effort on the inside of the track, which was very heavy, left him without, anything in reserve over the final furlong and had he made his run on the outside, where the going was much firmer, it is possible that he would have reversed places with the winner. Ginger Jack has been responsible for bad efforts on rare occasions, but on the whole his racing has stamped him as a high-class pacer with a bright future and he will still be in demand the next time he goes to the races. "

TURF GOSSIP

New Zealand-Bred Winner The New Zealand-bred gelding’ Kahapa, who was sent to India about 12 months ago, was a winner at the Calcutta November meeting. Kahapa was the medium of a plunge, and won running away. He was ridden by the Australian jockey, N. Percival, who had arrived only the previous day. Percival also rode another winner the same day. Spell Possible A Dunedin report states that McHeath may require a spell before he races again. On the return journey from Invercargill to Dunedin he twice got down in his box, and lost a good deal of skin in the process. On the second occasion the train was pulled up to allow the horse to be got out of an awkward predicament. Improved One of the most improved horses seen out at the summer carnival at Ellerslie was Loombination, who proved that his win with top weight over a mile and a quarter in the hack class was no fluke by subsequently finishing third in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. Loombination is more solid than formerly and stays on well. Not at Best The three-year-old Martara was not seen at his best at the summer carnival at Ellerslie, and he affected his prospects by hanging away from the rails in his races. Even so he finished very close up in the Great Northern Derby, and might have won if he had kept a straight course. If produced fit, he may be forth watching at Trentham. Leger Enclosure at Trentham . The outside enfclosure at Trentham will in future be known as the Leger enclosure- All the 10s windows in the totalisator house on the lawn side of that enclosure have been restored, as well as pay-out windows, and in addition there will be, on the Leger side, . two £1 windows, one for win, and one for place, tickets. At present no dual issue is available for these two windows. Transport for Horses The Auckland branch of the New, Zealand Owners’, Breeders’, arid Trainers’ Association has been advised by! the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister for Railways, that he will be pleased to, give careful consideration ,to' the as- i sociation’s suggestion that the Railway Department inaugurate a motor transport service for the carriage of racehorses. A Lucky Owner Fairway, after racing on the last day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, was secured at a small figure by Mr W. Parsons, who has won three races with him on the West Coast circuit, worth nearly £2OO. . Fairway is a big gelding, and being by Catmint is likely to make a good hurdler. . Unable to Start Drum Fire, looking well, but showing signs of lameness, was paraded for the first time since he left Riccarton in the high-weight event at Reefton yesterday, but, after doing his preliminary, he became worse, and his rider, A. E. Ellis, rode him back to the birdcage. After an official inspection, the gelding was withdrawn, and the money invested on him refunded. Accidental Fall •, Pink Abbey was racing well when she fell in the Trial Hack Handicap at Reefton yesterday. An enquiry was held into the mishap, and after hearing the evidence the stewards found that the fall was accidental. Poor Displays Sibella, who paid a sensational dividend when trained by F. D, Jones, and who has been trained at Greymouth for the last year, has evidently lost all form, as she has shaped very poorly

FREE ROSE WINS HANDICAP IFrom Our Own Reporter.] GREYMOUTH, January 8. The last meeting of the West Coast circuit was opened by the Reefton Jockey Club to-day in ideal weather. There was a satisfactory attendance, and some keen racing was seen on a good track. The totalisator turnover showed a slight decrease as compared with that of the corresponding day last year, but with the small fields the figures were very satisfactory. Never in Trouble Owl’s Gleam was sent out a solid favourite for the Trial Hack Handicap, and, leading throughout, won without effort from Gas Mask, who was in second place throughout. Gold Boy was always in third berth, with Lady Bun and Night Dance beaten off. Fink Abbey got on to the heels of Owl’s Gleam after a furlong had been covered, and fell, her rider, A. Parsons, escaping injury. Easy for Fairway The favourite. Fairway, for the first High-Weight handicap also made a very small return. • Grampian acted as pacemaker early from Lochain and Sibella, but Fairway ran up to Grampian at the home turn and followed him into the straight, with Lochain and Sibella and Hunting Bag next. Fairway gradually wore down Grampian, and, ridden right out, gained a neck verdict. Hunting Bag was a fair third, four lengths in front of Sibella. Always in Front Linklight, another staunch favourite for the Junction Trot Handicap, led from end to end, but had to be kept up to his task to ward off Playwright, who was always in second place, and finished very solidly. Flying Helen was a good third, after being close up to the leaders throughout. Royal Grattan _ was well placed entering the straight, but broke, and weakened Into a poor fourth place. , Favourite Unlucky Investors received a setback when Monipere was beaten by Free Rose in the President’s Handicap. Arena and Free Rose disputed the lead from the early stages, but the latter had a useful advantage entering the straight from Arena and Monipere. Tfie lastnamed was hard ridden from the home turn, and drew up to Free Rose 100 yards from the post, but rah about a lot under pressure. . Free Rose was able to hang on for a neck victory. Maroha was a fair third, well'clear of Arena., . ■ A Class Sprinter Arrowrose, another short priced favourite, won the Members’ Handicap in a decisive manner. She hopped out smartly, and outclassed the field throughout. Copyist and Arrowmid* followed her into the straight, but neither had any chance of getting up to her. Copyist comfortably beat Arrowmid for second honours. A Hard Tussle The best field of the day paraded in the .Manila Hack Handicap,,; and

speculation was fairly evenly divided among four of the runners. Silver Slipper got away well on this occasion, and at the end of two furlongs she and Rotokino raced abreast in front of Owl’s Gleam and The Sandwichman. The two leaders entered the straight together and fought out a prolonged finish. Silver Slipper outstaying her rival to win by half a length, with a similar margin to The Sandwichman. Gay Colleen and Malvasia were next. A Narrow Margin The Sbldiers’ Trot Handicap provided the best finish of the day. Atarau King was the early leader and piloted True Reflection, Royal Grattan and Brian Boru to the straight. Brian Boru drew up to Atarau King inside the distance, and the pair settled down to a strenuous fight, the latter just lasting long enough to gain a head verdict. Kaitawa was a fair third, in front of Lucess and Envious. A Three-horse Race Metal Bird was sent out a much better favourite than Cyclonic for the three-horse field in the concluding event, and, taking charge early, led Cyclonic throughout. The latter got to within a neck of Metal Bird at the finish, but only on sufferance. Carfex was always in the rear of this pair.
