MOTOR-CYCLING

PIONEER CLUB Arrangements are now complete for the evening social trial to Kennedy’s Bush, and judging from the- number of enquiries that have been received it should be a very successful outing. There will be no! entrance fee for the trial, the only expense being the supper at the Sign of the Bellbird. Competitors are requested to note the following particulars, concerning the trial: ' , ; • - Each rider will draw for his number and that number determines the speed he will have to average to the check near Kennedy’s Bush, fhe route will be from, the clubhouse ! via Durham and . Brougham streets to Dyer’s Pass road,, turning left at Hackthorne road and continuing right through to the destination. At-Duff’s store at the intersection of Dyer’s Pass and Hackthorne roads there will be an observed section. The route requires the competitor to turn left up the hill at this spot and bonus marks will be awarded those who keep their feet on the rests and remain on the correct side of the road during the turn. This section will be used only to decide ties and will not be taken into account otherwise. The evening will be spent at the Sign of the Bellbird and there is every indication of a good muster of riders and friends. Those not wishing to compete in the trial may meet at the clubhouse or make the journey independently. The start will be at 7 p.m. from the club rooms. Members intending t.o support the week-end outing on January 23 and 24 are reminded that they should send in' their names to the secretary by Monday, January 18. BATTERY CARE

Motorists should periodically take their cars to a service station so that the specific gravity of the electrolyte in the cells can be tested with a hydrometer. The correct reading is 1.180. ;In summer, the filling caps of the cells should'be removed once a week to see that the plates are properly covered with ' distilled water, but in winter once a fortnight is sufficient. Corrosion of' the. terminals and" leads call be held in check by always keeping them coated with vaseline, but if this has not: been, done and a certain amount of corrosion has set in, the affected parts can be cleaned with a strong soda, solution, after which vaseline should be applied. • It is wise occasionally to examine the connexions for tightness. .
