THE HOLIDAY IN RANGIORA QUIET DAY IN THE TOWN Warm weather in Rangiora yesterday attracted many people out-of-doors for Christmas Day and the holiday passed very quietly. The town was deserted during the day, but hundreds of people visited Waikuku and other North Canterbury beaches. Parties from the Rangiora Brass Band and the Salvation Army were out carolling early in the morning, and visited most sections of the town. There were three celebrations of Holy Communion at St. John’s Anglican Church yesterday morning, and a special Christmas service was held at the Rangiora Methodist Church at 9 o’clock. At the Roman Catholic Church a midnight Mass on Christmas Eve was followed by a can ,ata, and there was another Mass yesterday morning. A light fall of rain on Christmas Eve did not keep residents at home, and there was a large crowd in town even after the business premises had closed at 10 p.m. Shops experienced a particularly busy evening attending to the wants of last-minute shoppers, and the amount of business done wa? greater than at this period for a number of years. The coloured lights and greenery in High street, and the setting off of fireworks, gave a festive atmosphere in the town. Christmas cheer for more thon 50 people was provided by the Relief of Distress Committee and the Rangiora Returned Soldiers’ Association distributed hampers to nine necessitous cases. Personal The Rev. J. A. F. Watson and Mr E. D. R. Smith (Rangiora) will leave on a motoring tour of the North Island on Monday. Mr and Mrs R. J. Walker and Miss M. Walker, of Rangiora, are visiting Sumner. Mr R. A. Milne, of Wellington, and Mr L. Milne, of Timaru, are spending the Christmas holidays 1 with their mother at Fernside. Mr and Mrs H. M. Chappell, of Rangiora, left on Thursday on a visit to Ealing, Ashburton. Mr and Mrs J. E. Strachan have left Rangiora on a short camping holiday. Mr and Mrs C. S. Ayers and family will leave Rangiora to-day to spend a holiday near Picton. Mr and Mrs R. Mclntosh have left on a trip to Dunedin, Invercargill, the Eglinton Valley, and the southern lakes district. No Sports Attractions Always an attraction for residents of Rangiora and visitors from all parts ol North Canterbury and Christchurch, the annual gala at Waikuku beach on Boxing Day has been cancelled this year at the request of the Health Department. The gala, which is oiganised by the Waikuku Beach Improvement Association to make possible further improvements at the resort, may be held later in the season. No matches in the North Canterbury Cricket Sub-Association’s competitions will be played to-day. The senior and junior grades of the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association’s competitions are finished, and no intermediate grade fixtures will be played to-day or next Saturday. Motor-cars Collide Damage to the right-hand front part of both motor-cars involved was the result of a collision between two vehicles in High street, , we^ King street intersection, about IU.JU on Christmas Eve. One car had a front wheel smashed and the other suffered damage to a lamp and fender. Light rain was falling at the time. Child Breaks Leg The young son of Mr F. J. Clark, Dalzell’s road, Rangiora, broke a leg when he pulled a motor-cycle over at his home on Wednesday evening. He received medical attention, and was later taken to the Christchurch Hospital. Regent Theatre Rafael Sabatini’s brilliant romance, “Captain Blood,” will be presented this afternoon and evening at the Regent Theatre, Rangiora. The new screen star, Errol Flynn, is m the lead, supported by Olivia de Haviland and a large cast of popular artists. On Monday and Tuesday (afternoon and evening), "The Country Doctor” will be shown. This fascinating dramatic romance of the Canadian backblocks features the now famous Dionne quintuplets, with Jean Hersholt and June Lang in the lead. On Thursday (New Years Eve) there will be a midnight matinee at 9.45, when the world-famous comedy, “Brewster's Millions,” will be presented, with Jack Buchanan as the star. Hats, streamers, and novelties will be distributed, and the entertainment will conclude at midnight with the audience singing “Auld Lang Syne.” The programme will be repeated on New Year’s Day at 2.30 and 8 p.m. Seats may be reserved at Watson s, telephone 202.
